Daughter on tractor = trust test

I think it is good to let children use the tractor (within a reason). When they get older (when they do as they please) it is not a big deal anymore. Same about driving car. All our kids learned to drive as soon as they showed interest. When they were 16 they were reasonably experienced drivers and were less prone to test the limits. We didn't have a farm when they were young otherwise I would let them to operate tractor etc.

I have a lot of people I have known with severe injuries from tractors. As much as we love 'em , toys they ain't. Even though I am a firm adherent of the "He who dies with the most toys wins" philosophy.

Just a week ago, one of the friends I talk to on the ham radio in Southwestern Virginia was cutting hay. Got off the tractor to do something, and while standing on the ground (NEVER) reached up to start the tractor. Broken sternum, multiple ribs, punctured lung, and some internal damage, but he will recover eventually. Simple........stupid.........mistake

Guess that's why my employers spent so much money getting me all those OSHA certs? Also, of course, so they could disavow the claims if I did do something stupid!

Life is full of dangers. I had a kid I knew in High School that died from being beaned with a baseball.

Speaking of young kids driving, when my youngest daughter was 16, we got her a used car. I went in to the house and told jer. I thought she would be excited.

She said she needed to finish her homework. Finally she came out and I asked her if she wanted to drive it. She said not tonight Dad. I have to finish some homework.

Yeah, my youngest son was like that too. He STILL doesn't have a license and he just turned 23. Of course he lives down in Bean Town so he's got plenty of public transportation there.

Here is my son at 5. He a good operator and very careful. He is now 8 and has operated bull dozers, backhoes and even a mini excavator. He is a very cautious kid and we spend a lot of time going over safety.

Good thing Dad's old 630 JD had a hand clutch, it would probably have been dangerous for me to have to jump on and off the seat every time I needed to stop or change gears. There was no way at 5/6/7 years old my foot could reach the pedal from a seated position. Besides with no power steering I had to throw all my weight into turning that tractor, wouldn't have been enough of me left to hold down the clutch too ;)

I just started to let my 5 year old grand son drive my Kubota G1900 lawn tractor around the yard. He started out with a battery powered tractor when he was 2. Moved up to a Suzuki 50cc atv when he was three and still rides that. He goes slow and is careful when driving the tractor. He even backs it back in to the garage with the grass catcher on when he is done using it. He wants to learn to drive the BX and can do it while sitting on the seat with me. But I told him he will have to wait a little longer for that. Anyway he is to light in the pants to drive it by his self, when he pushes the HST pedal it shuts off. Good thing!!
