This may help you.

Thanks, don't know how those shade numbers correlate to the settings on the auto dark helmet, I'll have to check the specs.

But the helmet is nice must be set pretty good cause I can see decently but also no discomfort, not to bright.

Wondered if they were really fast enough, but they sure are. No more of that temporary blindness from striking an arc before closing the visor.

Never really trained myself to focus on the weld puddle.

if you can't see the puddle while you are welding, you will be forever surprised by what you see when the slag comes off, because you will never really know what your weld looks like as you weld it.

once you learn to watch the puddle, you can learn to control the puddle, and you will know what the weld is going to look like before the slag ever comes off.

that's one of the things that makes a welder, we know pretty well what it's going to look like before it ever sees the light of day.

Those settings should be what your helmet shows. 9-14 is the range for most welding.

Everyone always says "watch the puddle". My question was always "Watch the puddle do WHAT?" It takes time and some instruction to get there, at least in a timely manner.

I'm gonna start concentrating on the weld under the slag.

DC has improved my welds, good rods have helped, gotta start looking closer, maybe get one of those cheater lens.
pretty soon I wont have to grind before I paint :)

This is the helmet I have with the 4x5 lens, bought it at a welding supply shop, it was the cheapest they had but probably a little better than HF model.

I have a Hobart handler 135 (the new model is 140) mostly collects dust. when I do use it I use gas, never even tried the free spool of flux core that came with it. Most of my welding is hillbilly repairs/builds with 3/16" and up.

I also have a Honda portable 170 amp machine. I don't need to do much remote welding, but have used it with decent results.
Anyone have an opinion on this type of machine, is it something you could make money with, or just a show piece. I got it very cheap from a friend, so I couldn't refuse it.
I really like Honda equipment, but I know they are not known for commercial tools.

JB.
