Sounds as though you have some water in your fuel. You have to dump the fuel bowl as well as change the filter. Also, I'd let some fuel run out of the tank or change the tank contents, to get the water out.

I don't think PowerService will do much good against water. Think it's for antigel (e.g. gelling from wax in the fuel) and biocide.

In about 250,000 miles of driving 2 car diesels, I've never had a water problem. Always keep a spare filter pair of filters (prefilter and main filer) in the trunk for this, but never had had to use them.

I'd go with the diesel fuel that is available at the pump, and leave out the addative junk, which shouldn't be at all necessary. I'd guess it's too much addative, rather than too little.
You also mentioned in another thread about the HST hydraulics 'icing' up, and not working in the cold. I'm not saying the two are the same problem, but maybe the two are linked in that you have water in both the fuel and the hydraulics.
Any chance this could have happened, looking back at the history of your tractor. Flood? extra washing? power washer?

If me, I'd start over with new filters and new fluids including fuel. Something very out-of-the-ordinary is going on with your tractor. They don't normally react to cold this way.

Ralph has a very good point...There are some treatments that do better than others on water but most of them have alcohol in them. Be very careful with them and raid the kitchen for measuring cups if you have to.....Moma won't like it /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif but it works. Just don't bring them back when your done /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Power Service specifically says right on the bottle "no alcohol". I have used it in my 2210 and Duramax pickup for almost 3 years with no problems.

My 2210 is at 130 hours on the original fuel filter - no problems with water. Maybe I have been lucky in getting clean "dry" fuel? I live in MI so cold winters and temperature swings are the norm here.

If I was having problems of the magnitude described I would drain the tank, change the fuel filter and start over with fresh fuel, including the right amount of Power Service. It's always possible to get the last few gallons from a tank and pickup quite a bit of water.

BTW....the little Yanmar in my 2210 runs much quieter and smokes less when running Power Service, too.

beenthere -

I bought the tractor new from a dealer. It had 2/10s of an hour on it, and the first tank of fuel ran flawless.

I paid a visit to the dealer tonight where I picked up a couple of filters. We talked through the issue. He's pretty smart; the family farms 2K acres and has been in the tractor business for over 35 years. He suggested watery fuel, and also sugested no visiting the BP for my diesel. I'll buy it from the local grainery from now on.

There was definetly gelling of the fuel - lots of wax in the filter and chunks in the bowl. I'll drain it tonight (it's 8 bloody degrees on a hill with 15mph wind) before the Packer game.

At the end of the day, I became aware that the support and advice I get here is equal or better than many of the shops out there. And I really like the price! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It's easy to give advice when your feet are warm and you can feel your fingers. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Another tidbit: check all of your electrical connectors when your hands are warm. I suffered miserably for a many hours two years ago when I had a loose connector that was routed from the seat safety switch. It would run for awhile and just blubber down. I thought it was a fuel issue. Went through all the motions of clearing the fuel like you did. I don't know why I started checking those safety circuits, but I do it a couple times a year now.

Replaced the filter, with no luck. I finally called the dealer and they did a house call today; the tractor is running fine now. I was at work so I'm not sure what the fix was, but I'll call them tomorrow to find out.

they also sealed the bead on the left front tire which had a slow leak. Oh yeah, and installed my new $50 /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif befco 3ph pto spreader!

I'll post the solution when I learn more.

$50? I'll bet a lot of posters here would like to know how you got a Befco PTO spreader for $50!

When I went to the dealer on Monday for the fuel filters, I told him I was interested in a spreader. He showed me wheel-driven units, and then we started talking about 3ph spreaders. After a bit, he asked if I was 'interested in a bargain?' - to which I said sure!

He told me that he had a used BEFCO spreader coming in, and I could have it for $50. Well, I'd already researched it, and figured this unit he was offering must be POS, but for fifty bones I figured it's worth a look. Well, they installed if for me when the fixed the tractor. Check out spreader pics here
