Rig a boat tank to the tractor and see if your problem goes away. If it still gets air with a steady supply of fuel it probably has a bad injection pump. You should have bubbles at all the injectors if you have a supply problem.

I've been slowly fearing this might be the issue (pump), as I got a "frothy" spray of fuel when I loosened the line at injector, then I got a strong spray. As long as machine is at idle, it will seemingly idle forever, but put a demand on it and it just sucks the system dry evidently.

Are these things easily rebuildable? I am reasonably inclined mechanically, I've looked at pump, relatively easy to get to and take off (with only thought of concern being the "timing" aspect of it upon reinstallation).

Guess I will investigate sticker shock and also look into prices of rebuilt...

Sigh.... ever just want to bury your head and tell yourself it's not happening to you... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Just some thoughts :

Tractor starts and runs well for a short period of time:

[means fuel system is acting properly]

Sediment bowl was filled with junk

[means fuel system still may have impurities in it]

Fuel filter visual check

[means you can tell if impurities present]

Stalling after running for a short period.

[means velocity of fuel in system has picked up impurities and they have lodged on a screen or filter.]

Tractor starts and runs well after sitting for a while.

[ means fuel system has again been filled with fuel. perhaps impurities have fallen of screen/filter or there is a very slow rate of fuel reaching pump. Sort of verified by nature of fuel discharge at injectors.]

Hope someone can use these thought to find a solution.

Just hung up with the local JCB dealer, told him of my tribulations.. he asked me a question that sparked an interesting conversation.

Upshot, gaskets in filter housing.

When I buy a new fuel filter, it comes with 2 new filters. I've always scratched my head on this, because the filter is sandwhiched between a glass bowl and the "top". The glass bowl however, is ALSO sandwhiched between the "bottom" and the filter. so, you have THREE contact surfaces yet, TWO gaskets in the box. I put the gaskets on top and bottom as I recall it was when I first EVER replaced them.... I was wondering why there was not a gasket in between the glass bowl and the bottom of the filter, but since this is "how it was", I didn't fret too much. He said there should be and that was likely the place that air was seeping into the system. (although you can't "see" any).

Soooooooo, I think I'll take care of the "obvious" cheap idea first.. lol, then work further into it.

(now..why would they give you 2 gaskets, when you need 3???) /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif but if that is all that's wrong and I've learned a lesson for future, I guess I can adjust and deal with it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Will advise if this "fixes" issue.

If I rember correctly from my working on Nasty Fergusons (perkins engines) the glass bowel is not a standard item, it is optional. We had removed some of them because of problems like you are having. It sounds like you have a air leak between the tank and fuel pump some place if it was after the pump it would not draw air and would also show up as a leak. Check all fuel lines and gaskets for small cracks or leaks which would allow air to be drawn into the fuel system. I have had this problem on the tractors I maintained. 12 of them T35's I think, it has been awhile.

Welp, I know I can vouch for a small leak at the junction of the glass bowl and filter. I dont recall it leaking too much before, so I'm keeping fingers crossed.

Whoo hooooooo /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Found the problem.

After crawling underneith to clean out fuel tank
After crawling underneith to clean out sediment bowl
After cleaning tank out
After rinsing tank
After taking entire dash & stearing wheel cowling off to remove/replace fuel sending switch ( I LOVE knowing how much fuel I now have /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif )

It still died /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

So, follow the trail. I took a fuel line off the "out" side of the fuel filter, little flowing out. I took the main supply line off the IN side of the fileter, little flowing out.

I took the pressure side off the transfer pump, fuel blurped out. HA... I have some obstruction in the fuel line between pump and filter. An hour later after disassembling the line and other brackets so I can take the bent, formed line out without destroying it.. I blow into it.

No obstructions, it's as clean as a whistle. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Put it all back together... get to wondering again.

I take the pressure side of fuel pump reinstall it, turn over again, no fuel. I take line back off pump, fuel blurps out. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Now I'm getting ideas.. I stick my finger over the outlet and wala... no fuel pressure. Seems the internals of my transfer pump, transferred to Pump Heaven.

It's rebuildable, so i disassembled it and parts fell out. My oh my, what goes where?

I stare at it for 30 minutes, rolling the parts over in my fingers, tinkering.. then the flash hits me, this goes, here, that goes there... this other part? dunno, I guess it will be an extra part left over /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Put back together and fired right up, runs like a top.

What sealed the deal... WAY up above, I made comment that I had air bubbles coming out the fuel return line back to tank from my injector rail... NOW I don't have bubbles, it's solid. Now I understand that while idling, I evidntly have a lot more fuel returning back to tank unused, and when the pump was hardly pumping, it was just burping out little bits of fuel, making it look like bubbles.

Ahh... life is wonderful

By the way, the headlight is fixed in car too /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Next time Brutus dies, I'll simply leave it and go get new transfer pump.

Thanks for all the ideas & help.

Richard

Accomplishment yes.. thank you , thank you...

I timidly drove it around the drive, then field, then road to try to replicate the issue, ran fine & strong.

I was realizing at them time I was doing it (with the hoe NOT extended) that I OUGHT to extend it ... sort of like a big happy proud peacock feather strutting around... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
