Dead Short in Battery, Again

Thanks James, I'll try all that you suggest and report back. Due to family and work obligations it may be Monday.

Thanks so much to everyone! 73s

"Dead short" usually describes 2 adjacent cells, not the whole battery.

I have seen a shorted cell. Could that be what he is talking about? Usually it's not a dead short.

Maybe, but a simple voltage check would show a shorted cell.

... And it should try to start but be sluggish or chatter or something. At least light up the lights. I dont think he has the "shorted" battery -- warranty trade in. Monitoring the latest replacement as suggested ought to give some clues.

Vibration can cause a battery to go bad,but I would not think you could have vibrated it to much so quickly. Autozone sells a large number of batteries and replaces them if you have a problem. Sears used to be this way with their Diehard battery. Now you pay as much for one battery at sears as other places charge for two. I have a bad caterpillar brand in my Kubota and have used it for 4 years now. It was a return and a friend gave it to me.

I had the "new" battery checked at another auto parts place, they said it was good . With this battery reading 12.7 volts still nothing, jumping this battery it would turn over very slowly. I pulled the starter, rebuilder said brushes and all looked good, said it could be the solenoid but he doubted it. Paid the $70 for the solenoid, put it on and it started.

Charging voltage @start was 14.3, at idle 14.3, high rpm was 14.35, with lights on 14.25. Shut it down and voltage dropped to 13.2. Disconnected ground cable and checked amps on 10 amp scale between the ground post and ground cable and it was .25.

It was getting dark on me so left grnd cable disconnected.

Well good. That 1/4 A drain will have to be found tho. It will run your batt down in about 4 days. ... perhaps its a temporary drain into a capacitive circuit. :confused3:

Now you just need to disconnect things one at a time and find which ones stop the current. Be sure to check the alternator.
