I could understand him saying he'd "rather not", but it does seem that he would have offered some explanation as to why he'd rather not. If he's not a Kubota dealer, it may be that obtaining the right parts is more trouble than it's worth (he'd likely have to pay more for parts than a Kubota dealer would pay), may be because his mechanics lack familiarity with Kubotas, may be he's just too busy to take in other brands, not being a Kubota dealer, he might not be able to handle warranty work on them, or any number of other reasons. If I'd been in your place, I'd have asked him why he'd "rather not"; he didn't say he wouldn't do it. I think most businesses have to turn down some jobs.

An explanation, if he had time to give one, would have been good from him.

However, my Deere dealer is pretty good friends with the Kubota dealer and both are in the same town. Maybe my Deere dealer would feel uncomfortable taking Kubota's in for mechanical work, but that I really don't know. Maybe the Massey dealer just doesn't like Kubota's in a certain way, but some other answer than the one you received would likely have been easier to take.
He could easily have have said "sure, bring it in anytime, we love to spend t-i-i-i-i-m-m-m-e on those orange tractors (grin)". /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yeah, the MF was not only more expensive, it was a "demo" according to the dealer. It was the only one they had, it had 20 hours on it (that's a lot of demo time if you ask me), it had obviously been outside for a while (quite a bit of rust for something "new," and after doing some research on the manufacturer's website, I discovered it was a 2004 model, that they were trying to sell as new in 2006.

I can see what you are saying, in a way. On the other hand, I am coming up to my 50 hour service. The Kubota dealer will charge a $60 pickup fee, and these guys are a 90 second ride down the street. Besides, I had hoped that we'd be able to establish a good working relationship for my future needs. Also, before I met him, I had purchased a JD riding mower last year, and he said he'd work on that, as well as my walk-behind snowblower. Finally, I don't really get it. I mean, I thought he'd at least appreciate that I tried to give him my business. He just couldn't match Kubota's price/performance.

I just don't like to have a neighbor I drive by every day, not want to do business with me. Its kind of a drag.

I also suspect the owner of the dealership might have said something different. This was the sales guy and he was really pushing me to buy from him. Maybe not, but maybe.
