Dealer Mistake ?

   / Dealer Mistake ? #11
My friend already took delivery of the tractor, a week later the dealer called and asked for more cash, nothing more than making the buyer feel guilty.

This is the owner of the dealership that is doing the sales and calls.

I figure if the asking price was paid thats it papers are all signed and delivered.

I agree that a deal is a deal. However,:D, if your buddy is confident that an honest mistake was made, then $1000 in the scheme of the price of a tractor and doing a good thing would seem to me to be a good value.

I think I would try to find out if this particular person has done this to other customers.

I say you split the difference and offer him $500. Yes it's a mistake but personally I've found that maintaining a good relationship with a dealer is very useful.

If the other dealer was over priced they may be over priced on everything and you could end up paying more than that $1000 in repairs and service to them.

I bought it, paid CASH for it (no financing), took delivery, used it and more than a week later they want more money......good luck

I own a company and I quote price all the time. I make a mistake and loose money on the deal, my mistake and I eat it. Not happily but I do.

Like others said if its a good dealer that you have delt with before and want to stay on his good side then work something out. If not my answer is too bad

I have a friend who bought a Kubota M5640SU 4-wheel drive with a loader. He got a reasonable price from one of the local dealers and a higher price from the other. He bought the tractor at the lower price. A while later the dealer calls and said he made a mistake that he priced out a 2-wheel drive not 4-wheel. He wanted a $1000 to cover the difference.

Any thoughts, I sure have some,
#1 I think the difference between 2 and 4 wheel is a lot more than $1000.
#2 is there was at least 3 months time between order and quote and delivery plus a month waiting for the loader at the dealers.

How many times have you heard .." A deal is a deal " ...or " If it is writing there is something there if not it is nothing but air "

I submit this dealer is full of hot air...If the situation was reversed and he had overcharged by $1,000.00 and it was in writing and that much time had gone by...what luck do you think your friend would have getting the dealer to give up the $1,000.00...No luck at all the dealer would be waiving the signed quote and underlying contract in your friends face saying " a deal is a deal " and that , in my opinion is what your friend should do..He should simply tell the dealer he feels his pain but he made his decision based on the quote he was given and paid the price that was agreed on , therefore the time for negotiating is over....That is what I would do.

I would also say, the deal is done. Dealer can ask, but at this point I would not pay any more. If your friend paid a $1000 over by their miscalculations, they would not be giving him a $1000 back if the transaction was already completed.

No brainer to me. He bought it, the paper work was done and signed, he took delivery, it is a done deal. I actually think it pretty bold of the dealer to contact a customer 1 month after delivery and suggest he pay more money. Might be a good idea to find another dealer for service. As far as this guy goes he will see his mistake as your buddies fault forever.

Deal done. Especially if the paperwork quoted a model number etc.

You have now added 1 more "stealer" dealer story to my repertoire.

Your dealers in Mass. have guts to ask for an extra grand a week after delivery.

The problem will be if your friend ever needs work done. But the dealer has already proven he's not trustworthy.

In my neck of the woods the dealer usually delays delivery of the commodity until he knows you ABSOLUTELY need it.

Like you call up and say "I've GOT to have that tractor next week to plow for planting, what's taking so long?"

Then he knows you are hooked and finds his "mistake", and of course you pony up the money.

I've had that happen on several things. One was a van I special ordered, the dealer "found" a $650 error he needed me to pay as I was handing him the check. He called me back after I walked out the door with the check. He ate it.

I suspect that there is more to this story. If a 4wd was quoted, ordered, delivered and paid for, it's over. Hopefully the buyer is not forced to use this dealer for their warranty/service work, if they are, then probably best to work something out to avoid getting over charged for the next 20 years (not that they wouldn't even after paying the extra)...

If this was a larger dealer then I would say if they were a good dealer they wouldn't have called, their mistake not the buyers. If this is a small dealer then they may not be able to swallow the loss easily and hense the call. Still if he was a good dealer he would do his best to make it right by offering to do any work, like oil changes for the cost of the supplies, no labor fees or something like that.

But to just ask for $1000 is just stupid and wrong. If you pay him then you will feel like you were guilted into it and the dealer should be extra nice to you. If you don't pay you'll most likely wonder each time you buy something or get service if the dealer is trying to get that $1000 by jacking the price up. By asking the dealer now has put the trust in question.

This is the way I was thinking, too. BUT, the customer may give him the $500 and the dealer STILL has a grudge come maintenance time or repair time.

That would really suc.!!

The whole deal really bites. I don't think it's up to the customer to "find" the dealers mistake.

I mean I'm not a stiff but, in this case, I might just take the tractor and keep my money.

Like someone said, if the customer bought the tractor for a $1000 more than he should have paid (it's happened more than once) the dealer would tell him to get lost....a deal is a deal.

Sounds to me like the dealer needs to measure twice, cut once.
