I've got a Bazillion bits/sec fiber connection through VTel. VT's independent phone service. There's also Verizon in the nearby area, and most don't like it because they aren't doing any upgrades of existing lines.
I do have existing land line # at my home, but dropped service at my flip property next door. If someone buys it VTel will give them fiber after they work out whatever is offered.
I just yesterday hooked a ATT MicroCell made by Cisco to my ActionTec Router/modem to boost my in home signal to reduce dropped calls, weak signal, etc. So far it's not working well.
I may consider dropping the home line phone, but not sure it will do anything for me, reduce my billing, etc. 'cause I have a bundle, fiber optic internet, call waiting, forward, sideways, etc. Plus voicemail....
But I don't even keep the batteries in the hand held landline phones up to speed any more.
Oh, and the fiber has a backup battery that runs off electric I provide, but I don't own it or maintain it- VTel does. Supposed they get a signal if it dies or needs replacement.
BTW, the Pace fiber modem/router VTel supplied with my fiber upgrade does NOT work with ATT MicroCells, so they sent me the ActionTec and then wanted me to pay to ship them the old one. I called them and told them if they want it send a shipping label; it's not my problem their tech doesn't work with ATT's MicroCell. I should be getting a label on Monday.
And for those who say that the cell phones don't need a landline connection - that's not quite right. If the provided landline, for instance, DSL or Fiber internet supplier runs to one's house one can boost a almost non-existent cell signal with a MicroCell, IF you can get it working....just ask me how?!
I've got friends in Upstate NY that have Verizon and can't get even a landline from them to the house. Without it they can't get internet, except satellite. They can't even get them to fix their existing landline because it's miles of wire to the poles and Verizon is basically not upgrading or even fixing any existing copper lines at all.
