Deep cycle /marine battery question

I have a service truck that has a 5000 watt power inverter in it. It is ready for new batteries soon, so I was cleaning stuff up, checking the system and found something peculiar, at least to me. As I have an extra core, I wanted to save the best one if the need for one came up and return the worse three . Out with my tester and found that 2 of three gave distinctly different readings testing from the threaded posts rather than the tapered lug next to it. I can assume that there is a defect in the battery. How it worked at all, I dunno. Does it matter which set of terminals are used normally?

Also, can anyone recommend a good manual disconnect for this heavy cable?

yes it can make a diff as the ss threaded post is imbedded into the lead post, the contact point should always be the lead.

I finally looked. The Crown Deep Cycle battery does have seperate post and threaded post coming out of the plastic. The Odesy (sp?) glassmat batteries have a top lead post and side terminals like a GM battery. Not sure about the others yet.

i have found that interstate the best. in my diesel truck, 3 cars, bass boat which has i marine starting and 2 deep cycle, and my tractor. all interstate. started putting then in in 2012 and wish i had used them many years earlier! side by side has agm and small fishing boat, electric start agm.

Next time you are around one of your Interstate batteries, read the verbiage on top of the battery. They are made for HD service. That's what marine dealers around here stock.

On using a deep cycle for starting, I bought a 50 year old JD 4010, 70 hp, 350+ cu. in. diesel tractor with a used size 27 deep cycle battery as the only starting device. I used it for at least half a dozen years before I replaced it.....so it can be done....even with diesel engines with no starting aids in the winter.

On they make both, WW for one stocks dual purpose size 27 batteries if you are looking for one. I run WW batteries (Everstart or whatever the name) in my on road vehicles and lawn equipment and get good service out of them. The tractors get OTR size 31 HD truck batteries with ⅜" stud terminals and the boat the Interstate.
