Deer proofing my pigs feed

Sorry I did not respond earlier. I thought I would get notifications if anyone responded to my post. Anyway, those feeders look like they could work but I would not put it past our dear to figure out how to get into them. They figured out how to get the lid off of the 55 gallon barrel of pig feed. But the real problem is the barrels of vegetable trimmings that I am dumping on the ground. I could not put those in a feeder.

I wouldn't feed those vegetables to fatten your hogs anyway. Hog's should be getting something with 13 or 14% protein to fatten them out right.

I was thinking the same thing. When I raised a few hogs I was getting fruit and produce from the supermarket. Then the light when on when I remembered that fruit and veggies are what we eat when we want to lose weight. You're trying to fatten them up.

Hogs don't go on a diet. I time my pigs to finish in October. I feed them leftover fruit, vegetables, corn, and waste milk if I can get it. It makes really great flavored pork.

My pasture hogs have never been intimidated by deer. They don't take crap from anything. Maybe it's the breed? I prefer Hampshires.

They are getting a 16% protein commercial feed. The veggies are free and I feel that they make the meat taste better and make up for any vitamin deficiencies in the commercial feed. And the pigs just love eating that stuff. I know it takes about 9 lb of vegetables to equal 1 lb of commercial feed, but I don't think it can do any harm.

Normally I try to get 30 to 40 lb feeders around March or april, but this year I ended up getting 20 to 30 pounders around June, so they are much smaller than I am accustomed too. I can usually get my pigs up to 400 lb by December. I'm not sure what this breed is this time, some mix. I prefer Berkshire, but they can be a hassle to scrape. Especially once they get their winter coat in.
