New update... This last Sunday afternoon, my wife, sister and myself where taking a walking down by the creek along our upper field. As we were getting back in the truck, my wife heard a shot and then another.. She ask where it came from.. The way we were sitting I figured it should be down at the bridge by our lower field. So we drove over, came around the edge of the field and there was a pickup truck stop by two game wardens at our gate, hunting off the road. The wardens had set a decoy out and only taken 15 minuntes to get the first person to try a shot. That deer was out across the field it was at least 650 yards. I can not believe any hunter would try a shot that long out of a pickup truck. He lost his hunting rights, rifle and got a $500 fine. His wife was driving with a supended DL, he did not have one, she got a $250 ticket for "aiding and abetting" and the had to wait for an hour and a half for someone to come and drive the truck home. The bad thing to me was that we were just on the other side of the tree line from the decoy when the shots were fired... That do you guys think.....

Stupid is as stupid does. It's always the minority that give the majority a bad name. They're really lucky that they didn't lose their vehicle. Some guys over by where I live got caught spotlighting and shooting deer and they lost everything.

Jag,

I'm a little confused from the description. Was season closed? Did he get ticketed for shooting from or across a public road? Did he hit the decoy/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif
650 yards.. the only one I know that can do that is Quigley of "Quigley Down Under" Just curious.

We're building a new house in the middle of a field surrounded on three sides by 18 acres of woods. I posted NO HUNTING signs up along the road in front of some of the woods. Today I got a payback for not wanting bullets flying around my new house and around the workers building it. I found a dead doe that had been gutted and dismembered, laying in the ditch and over the fence right beside one of my no hunting signs. I guess this is a new version of the Welcome Wagon. Stupidity wears many hats, even orange ones.
I'm going to try to attach a picture, but be forewarned, it's gruesome.

I had a problem with hunters and motorcycle riders for a while after we bought our property. I posted no tresspassing signs. Someone stole the signs. Then I cut down some locust trees and put them vertically across the trails in a big 6' high X with lots of orange tape and big trail closed signs. Someone drove an ATV back there and stole the logs. Then a friend asked me if he could hunt there. I gave him a card with my name and phone number and written permission to hunt and to ask anyone else to leave. I also called the local conservation officer and reported that someone was baiting with carrots and told him about my friend having permission to be there. Between the two of them, they kicked out about 20 people over the first few years. The numbers really dropped. The motorcycle trails grew over and we no longer have problems. I know the conservation officer still patrols out there because he recently stopped and questioned my in-laws, who were out there cutting firewood. He almost didn't believe them, but they had the key to the gate.

Another approach is to post signs that it is a leased hunting area. For some reason, people that have no problem tresspassing do have a problem invading another hunter's space. The only drawback to this approach is if an animal rights group gets wind of it they might be worse than the hunters.

I still keep the no tresspassing signs up. And I patrol it before hunting season starts. The day before opening season I have gone out and removed white reflective thumbtacks stuck into the trees that the hunters use to mark their trail in the dark. I also tear down any tree stands. My friend took a real nice aluminum one and left a note that it could be retrieved at the police station. To my knowledge, no one ever claimed it.

Good luck.

TWINKLE TOES, I would imagine he was ticketed for shooting from a vehicle. I've never heard of any stataes allowing you to shoot from a car/truck/vehicle. Many states don't allow hunting from public roads either. He may also have been shooting onto private property.

Here in Michigan I've seen/heard of too many people breaking the laws while hunting. It blows my mind why people can't follow the rules such as not trespassing, not poaching, hunting outside legal hours, using illegal weapons, not buying licenses, etc.

Hunting is a game, and when you cheat, it takes the fun out of it.

TT, season was open.. The shooter was ticked for shooting from a public road. If he had gotten off the road or step out before the wardens had stopped him then he would also been ticked for trespass also.. The property owner that owns the field across the road and I both had ask the wardens to put up the docay before the season started. But they did not want to, they wanted to wait till season was open to make sure the bad boys had a rifle... I really did not think they needed to wait. Sorry there is so much to tell in this story trying to explain it all in a few sentences is really hard.

JW, that picture was not bad. If you would like to see bad I can show you bad. We will normally have about 6-10 deer remains along the road. The first year I was back up here on the family place there were 22 deer remains dumped under the bridge on the county road at the corner of our place.

Butz,

"....Hunting is a game, and when you cheat, it takes the fun out of it...."

Around here the game seems to be how many deer you can kill and a lot really do not care how. I know several brag how many they kill out of season...
