When I worked for Ak Dept of Fish & Game we could always get Deet from the military. It was VERY effective on clothing but proved to be a little harsh on bare skin. It had 95% active ingredients and combined with nasty 5 cent cigars the mosquitos could be held down to a dull roar.

Ticks are one of the many things that Alaska does not share with the lower 48.

We use the sawyer clothing spray, good for a bunch of washes. Also treat the yard with talstar granular. Pet safe once its watered in. The dog gets k9 advantix.

Used to know a guy who worked at a Nuke Power plant in FLA and he had bug spray with DEET that had to be approved for use in the plant. The spray must have had a very high DEET level because it would scare off squeeters in the Everglades while the normal, store bought DEET bug spray did not work at all. :thumbsup: We did not glow in the dark so it must have been the DEET. :confused3:

DEET on my skin is not a good thing so on the clothes it goes. :laughing:

They're really aggravating when they attach to one's scrotum.

That's where the first one was back when I was about 8 years old.... sheer panic followed by me screaming "DAAAADDDDD!!!!!!"

As yet this is not the worst year I've seen in NW OK but they're out there.

When the trees leaf out, we prep the clothes for going to the ranch. We buy permethrin in the equestrian section of Attwoods. It's concentrated and cheaper than paying for someone's water. We mix it in gallon containers and then fill spray bottles from that. Clothes get dampened, rolled up and placed in trash bags to "brew". They go on damp and that's annoying but less than attached ticks. We also spray the neck and head and get to work. Following this process, we have never had a tick attach.

I heard the right way to use permethrin for deer ticks is soak cotton ball in it, stuff the them in empty toilet paper tubes, scatter the tubes/100 around your property, mice find them, make nest with the permethrin cotton balls and that kills the ticks because the mice carry the ticks, should be called mice ticks not deer ticks.

What brands should I look for to buy permethrin? We live in tick heaven and my wife had Lymes disease terribly several years ago. She has had two stuck on her quite deep already this year.

A few years ago my sister was bitten by a tick while cleaning out a shed.
She contracted ehrlichiosis from the bite. Nasty stuff. Took almost a year to recover completely.

This past fall was the worst ever for ticks in NJ- this spring is just as bad. I walk a number of local woodland and field trails on a daily basis. I forgot to spray my boots and jeans yesterday and ended up finding over a dozen dog ticks crawling on me when I got home. Now I hear about a new tick borne virus that may be fatal or leave lasting neurological problems. Thinking of putting a little frontline on my back where I can't lick it.
