You mention that this is an intermittent problem, my gut feeling is to lean more to a wiring problem rather than a sensor failure problem. Of course it can be an intermittent sensor. The likelyhood of the sensor being intermittent would depend on how it is designed to work. Usually these are either go or no go and not much in between. Might be as simple as a poor connection as AKfish first suggested. I should add that he has a background in instrumentation wiring. That is what I would look for first, and is low in cost too.
I should mention that since the 110 has a computer onboard diagnostics are in favor of the dealer with the computer interface.
