Deere 4720 capabilities

What size 5000 series tractor? The larger 5000 series are definitely in a different league than the 4720. However, the smaller 5000's, although much heavier and better for ag applications, will have similar HP.

I think he had something like a 5325, it was an odd model number. But i would look into the 5000 series, especially if you plan to do some pretty heavy work, the 5000 series will be more up to the challenge. :)

The 4720 has similar HP to a 5325, but the 5325 is approximately 1 ton heavier!! That, combined with R1 tires vs R4 tires on most 4720's, the 5325 will DRASTICALLY outwork the 4720 with ground engaging tasks and handling heavier attachments.

I pulled the four row planter with my 3320 for a trial, knowing that it would not have the oomph needed and it would pull it just fine. When I turned the PTO pump on though, it was not enough.

i would have to say although never driven a 5000 series, they hydro on a 4720 makes it a very handy tractor that would be hard to beat. the 4x20's are very user friendly. you can size a mower and disc to fit and you would have a great package, it'll pull that planter no problem. i think a newer 4720 is about twice the hp as a 3320...

I know the 4720 will pull it fine. The get to be heavy all loaded down with fertilizer and no till. Most of my planting is on flat land

I agree that a 5000 series may be a better choice for you, for a couple of reasons. The larger frame size is more appropriate for 4 row equipment. Higher weight will provide more tractive force for ground engaging tools. It is very likely that in an ag situation the advantages of the compact tractor are not needed. Larger tractors such as the 5000 and 6000 series tractors are more appealing when their primary use is on one property or adjacent farm properties. These are still medium sized tractors that are heavy enough to get some work done.

Where the compact 110tlb and 4520 I have come in handy are moving between sites several times a week, close quarters work where larger machines are hard to fit and additionally need to be agile. The 4720 with ehydro is easier to jockey around than a 5000 series.

I would choose a tractor large enough to handle the highest load implement anticipated.

Very good info and advice - IMO.

radman1 has a number of posts here on TBN regarding his experiences with his cabbed 60hp, 4520 and a MX-8 rotary cutter. Long and short - he was somewhat disappointed with the 4520's capability to handle the MX-8 in heavy material.

Of course, everything depends upon the work YOU have planned. Number of acres, type of work - just mowing brush and planting a few food plots - or more extensive Ag projects like full-blown hay production and row crop production.

If that's the ultimate direction you're headed - you'll be money ahead - to move up to a 5000-6000 machine.

A fully optioned 4720; wheel weights, cab, etc. etc. is only around $10K less than a fully tricked out, top-of-the-line; 5075M with cab, etc.

I know... I just bought a 5075M.

Best of luck with your decision.

I have pulled a 10 ft wheel disk and a 10 ft field cultivator with a 4700 and it handled it fine. I would think it would handle your planter you are talking about. I am planning on buying a 4 row in the future and using it behind the 4700. I attached a pic of the disk and tractor
