Its a plastic steering wheel and has a top speed of 8 mph /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif. I don't expect any safety problems. Besides, the same modification on my 445 went 7 years with no problems.
Thanks for the compliment. I use it all the time and makes one handed operation ideal and frees up the other hand to run the controls.
