Thing is a lot of people believe or buy into that BS, before I retired we got a new 125' hi-line truck that we did barehand hot work out of, everyday we would shutdown an hour early to send 1 man in it to go put it on the interstate so it could be run wide open down the interstate to possibly stand a chance of keeping it out of limp mode so we could work the next day, in all my years prior to that we had diesel trucks with no DEF and no problems or rare problems, the company lost a lot of money in lost man hours alone by shutting down an 8 man crew an hour early everyday, so I like you have to laugh when I see the reliable and robust comments, and while I do believe they are getting better this thing has put many reliable manufacturer's of diesel engines out of business, they saw the handwriting on the wall.

Some industries are exempt from pollution control standards. Railroad locomotives and cargo ships are a couple examples. Cargo ships use bunker oil as fuel. Bunker is cheaper but pretty nasty. I wonder about the cruise ships like Carnival?

I would venture a guess that wholly depends on where the ship is registered. HFO (heavy fuel oil) is nasty, but cheaper up front. The whole treatment process to burn it and extra filter costs, maybe they don’t get added by the math whizzes?

Look at Caterpillar and International.
CAT said screw this, we aren’t going to make some of the best diesel engines in the world unreliable with this pollution crap and exited the OTR truck engine business. They may have actually done a smart thing and saved their reputation.

International gave it a shot and ruined some of the best smaller vocational truck diesel engines ever built. Heck my ‘07 IH HT570 diesel would be a damn good engine were it not for the cooled EGR strapped to it.

Ignoramuses don’t understand what it takes to produce their food and all their amazon junk and ship it to their homes….. DIESEL ENGINES. For now, that’s what does 90% of the work.

If you make them expensive and unreliable the cost of goods goes higher.

And globally run ships use fuel with a maximum sulfur content of only 0.5% ... But, if they are gonna operate in coastal Europe or N. America, they can't go over 0.1% sulfur content ...

BTW ULSD has only 15 ppm (0.0015%)

All the more reason to stop importing so much from overseas and start making things here in the USA again. We could reduce the amount of inbound bunker fuel burning cargo ships.
Also reduce the amount of jets hauling inbound cargo, which spew a lot of pollution, too.

True on the low sulfur diesel, BUT do they have humongous “reliable and robust” DEF/DPF/EGR systems strapped to them?

Let’s not forget that diesel per gallon is ~0.75 higher per gallon and the mpg is way lower on class 7 and 8 trucks. But, the price of gas is down so everybody’s happy at the pump and mad at the stores for charging too much.

After decades in the business I have found that it’s always been screw the trucker and the farmer and the man who uses equipment that runs on fuel in general.
You want cheaper goods & services, lower the price of diesel fuel. An easy way to do that is stop taxing it to death.

Especially in your state. Harrisburg last week, diesel was 4.359 cash price Luckily all I needed was a sammich and potty break.
