Well let's see. It does not meet the current CJ-4 spec, Volvo VDS-4, Mack Premium Plus 07, Cummins CES 20076, CES 20077, CES 20078, CES 20081, MIL-L-2104B, MIL-L-2104C, MIL-L-2104D, MIL-L-2104E, MIL-L-46152D, MIL-L-46125E, CID AA 52039, Caterpillar TO-2, CAaterpillar ECF-3, What Detroit Diesel spec does it meet? It doesn't list the spec number. Navistar, Allis Chalmers, Series 3, GM6048, MTU Type II, ACEA B3. Just to name a few and there are more that it does not meet. Is that enough?

DP...you've proved your point, they don't advertise or label the stuff as passing all those other tests so it must be crap and anybody fool enough to use it is just asking for trouble.

does that make you feel better?

I retract my generalization,Mobil1 does not meet every spec known to man,so I'm changing it to state

" Mobil 1 ir Delvac 1, meet just the specs known to the average American trucking market guy whose looking for oil to use in his rig, anybody else needs to consult Bob the Oil Guy or Diesel Dude".

.

you selling something else?

That makes it look like there are a myriad of specs it fails to meet. But it looks to me like "O7" or "2007" appears in many of those manufacturer's specs which tells me that the API CJ-4 rated oil is the one that meets them. Of course a CI-4 oil isn't going to meet them.

But unless you have a diesel with exhaust treatment (aka particulate trap), you don't need CJ-4. Nothing prior to 2007 models has particulate traps.

My 1987 Mercedes 350 SDL had a particulate trap and when they failed, they also took out the turbo with them. Good thing that Mercedes gave a lifetime warranty on the emission system.

An 87 with a particulate trap? How was that supposed to work with 5000 ppm fuel?

Anyway, thanks for the info. I stand corrected. I do still want to make it clear that CJ-4 is for the 2007 models with exhaust aftertreatment.

It worked well for 35 / 40 thousand miles and then needed to be replaced. Mine was replaced 3 times under warranty, and then MB sent letters to all owners that they were changing the design and the next time it needed to be replaced, it would be with the new design part. From that point you had a 12K warranty on that part, and then they were off the hook for repairs. I don't know how they got around the EPA lifetime requirement that they agreed to when they first started failing, but they did. I sold the car rather than gamble on the new part. I have since learned that the new part works, and that they also had to install a completely new exhaust system to work with it. That was a definite benefit, because by then, most of the cars need new exhaust anyway. Now, that the car is almost 20 years old, you don't see many of them left.

KICK - At no point did I say that Mobil 1 or Delvac was a bad oil. In fact you might even find that when people ask I recomend it. I was just clarifying that it does not meet as many spec's as you might think it does. You made a broad term stating it looks to meet every spec known to man, that it does not. Is it a good oil, yes it is. Are there better, yes. Are there worse, sure tons of them.

What oils would you rate better than Mobil 1?
