Redline, Amsoil, Royal Purple, Texas Refinery, Schaffer are a few that come to mind.

That makes it look like there are a myriad of specs it fails to meet.

But unless you have a diesel with exhaust treatment (aka particulate trap), you don't need CJ-4. Nothing prior to 2007 models has particulate traps.

they dont necessarily test for every certification, does not mean the oil will or will not pass a test..

seems it cost quite a bit of money to get certification, and its a case of why bother?

Regarding particulate traps, we ( my employer) tried a government sponsored 5 year experiment in 1992-1997, we had 5 vehicles equipped with Donaldson partculate traps.

We also operated about 20 vehicles in that same time frame using something called an EZ trap. the EZ trap required a special additive to be in the fuel, the donaldson was an electric stove inside of a muffler.

apparently the EZ trap has been around for quite awhile, its main business at that time was in underground mines, so it aint really all that new,

as far as farm tractors and equipment go, the particulate trap issue does not apply (YET).

the problem with "custom" oils is availabilty.

whether the smaller labels are better is debatable, because first you have to define the word better.

Oil Threads, sometimes the bane of the internet.

The information below was taken from the Amsoil Web Site. After reading the last paragraph I was left some what confused. What grade Amsoil should one use in a diesel engine manafactured prior to 1-1-2007. If I understand the paragraph, Amsoil recommends Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Diesel Oil (HDD) or Synthetic 10W-30/SAE 30 Diesel Oil (ACD), not their new premium diesel oil. Yet, in the first paragraph they state "It is “backwards compatible” with pre-2007 diesel engines and recommended for newer and older diesel and gasoline engines and other applications requiring the following worldwide specifications:_____ Confusing.

AMSOIL Synthetic 5W-40 Premium Diesel Oil replaces 5W-40, 10W-40 and 15W-40 viscosity oils. It is “backwards compatible” with pre-2007 diesel engines and recommended for newer and older diesel and gasoline engines and other applications requiring the following worldwide specifications:

• API CJ-4, CI-4+, CH-4, CF
• API SM, SL, SJ...
• ACEA E7
• Mack EO-O Premium Plus
• DDC Power Guard 93K218
• Caterpillar ECF-3, ECF-1
• Cummins CES 20081
• Volvo VDS-4
• MB 228.3
• MTU Type II

Synthetic 5W-40 Premium Diesel Oil may be used in pre-2007 diesel engines, but for increased protection and performance for extended drain intervals, AMSOIL continues to recommend Synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel& Marine Motor Oil (AME), Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Diesel Oil (HDD) or Synthetic 10W-30/SAE 30 Diesel Oil (ACD).

FWIW (not much), one of the other references cited in this thread made the same recommendation and included a vague explanation that TBN (additives) are reduced in the 2007 version so they won't crud up the new 2007 particulate traps. Considering this lower additive level, the previous oil might be a better choice if you wish to continue a proven extended drain interval program. I think that's what Amsoil means here.

It states, if you look at the specs also, if you have a 2007 diesel use there DEO oil. If you have an older diesel your can also use this oil (DEO).

There other HDEO's do not pass their CJ-4 spec's. The new(er) oil have lower ZDDP levels if that gains you anything.

For longer drains it is still too early to see what is better. Each engine burns a little diff and I would still use UOA to see what fits your engine.

I like Redline but for longer drains, they are out. Too much Molly for me.

FWIW, today I noticed on a jug of Rotella T 15w-40 that it is CJ-4 rated.
