100% true Andy. If you change according to mfg. recommendations the machine will probably last your childrens lifetime as well. Any diesel rated oil will do the same and the tractors will last longer than 98% of the people on this board will ever use one.

Now that should be a permanent stickypost at the top of the Oil, Fuel & Lubricants forum.

I really like the idea of a multi viscosity hydraulic oil instead of a straight cut, the oil will be thin when cold and thick when hot, the 5W-30 should be excellent, plus I've got a nice 30 gallon drum now too! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It does sound interesting.....especially for Vermont. Maybe you should start a new thread on the topic. I'm not looking forward to changing the hydro fluid at time soon, but when the time comes I'll be glad to know there there are choices. I have some other comments but I'll wait for a new thread /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

On the semi religious note....Oil fanatics seem to be a faith based following.

On my main part of my post.
No one has posted anything to show me how much longer my engine will last if I use the expensive synthetic oils. They have been on the market for quite a while and if manufacturers could prove longer engine life then they would have the figures out there. So I am assuming that there is no or little real engine life difference in engine life whether using good dino or synthetic.

Numbers are just numbers hinting at possible longer engine life.

Where is the proof of longer engine life ?

How much longer do you want your engines to last?

Any modern gasoline or diesel engine that is turbocharged and NOT using a high quality full synthetic is asking for trouble.

It depends here. For me a 100% synthetic has many advantages then just longer life. There is less oil changes, less mess, for me less time messing with oil, less wear, higher protection from sludge, oxidation etc. No worrying in winters about will it start & no using a heater etc.

When I could use a dino and go 5K miles or a synthetic and go 12K with wear limits (on 12K) the same as dino or less, it is cost and time savings.

The problem is many oil mfg’s never put it in writing they can go longer. Look at Mobil 1, this oil can go very long, longer then there 7500 oil and in some cases there EP rated oil. But since Mobil stopped there 25K mile drains long ago, they will say follow the car mfg guidelines. But there 7,500 oil is a blend (lesser oil & add’s) but they have it in writing it can go 7,500 miles. When the oil Mobil 1 is better all around.

It is like people think I oil test just to see if oil is still good. There is more to it. Same thing with synthetic.

On the sludge...
I just tore down my soobie engine with 199,997 miles on it. I have used Castrol exclusivly in it. Had NO sludge. Bearing wear is within limits, The inside of the engine just looks sort of gold guilded, Moly ? The reason for the teardown was to change the clutch and most seals on the leaky subie. Engine compression is within new engine specs.

The go longer aspect is nearly a wash when you consider the price difference in dino and synthetic. We see as low as -10F or so here in the winter and no starting problems.

How long do I want my engine to last ? As long as it possibly can. And knowing that the manufacturers do not promise that their synthetic oils will will make your engine last longer to me means that they cannot prove that it will. That is the faith based part of oil debate.

My last post on this thread.

I do believe that a synthetic is a better oil simply based on the technology and the quality of the base stocks as described and will likely give an engine extended life. I'm a firm believer in that you get you you pay for. The problem with the ultimate engine life argument and absolute best oil available lies in the fact that there's a lot more to a tractor than the diesel. So many of the compents get used hard (as they should) and may not last a "lifetime". The diesel is designed to wear about the same amount of time as the frame, transmission, electrical system, etc under normal operating conditions. What's the point of "perfectly lubricated" diesel when the entire surrounding tractor is shot 25 years later? What is the cost of the super oil over 25 years......substantial. I have to believe that if a person changes their oil/filter every 100 hours and uses a "good oil" all will be well. These are not race cars or motorcycles with engine life spans measured in minutes. Basically I believe there is a place for super high quality oil and oil tests, I'm just not sure this is the place for it, but I could be wrong. I guess we'll see in 25 years.

Really?? We have three powerstrokes with over 300k and not ever touched. Bodies are falling apart but the engines are still strong. We have a 4430 with over 20,000 hours and never touched. We have two 4440's with 15,000 hours and never touched. I've got 2000 hours on my 8320 now and wear #'s are minimal. My 6415 has 1500 hours and wear #s are minimal. Our 9600 has over 10,000 hours and never touched. The tach broke on the NH swather at 12,000 hours three years ago and it has never been rebuilt.
