I wonder how long straight mineral oil would be good for without any filters? Has anybody done a study on this lately?

Perhaps all engines should be run on this and remove those pesky oil filtration devices so we won't have to worry about replacing them anymore.

Isn't that what they first used in internal combustion engines when they invented them 100+ years ago? If it was good enough for the first experimental engines created in the beginning of the industrial revolution, it should still work in everything created since then very well.

That is great on your car.

My Lexus (ES) has the sludge issues and dino oil will not work well in my application; the oil breaks down quicker then kids in a candy store.

( Any modern gasoline or diesel engine that is turbocharged and NOT using a high quality full synthetic is asking for trouble. )

I must be asking for it, then, because I've run a whole bunch of turbo diesel engines a whole bunch of hours/miles on dino oil and the trouble I'm asking for has yet to show up.

That statement infers that all the API CI-4 rated dino oils on the market today are only suitable for non-turbo, non-modern (whatever that means) engines. If you can convince me of that, you've got a stellar career in sales ahead of you.

Thanks for the heads up, I also have run a bunch of turbodiesels myself and always use only synthetic oils since they are so much more resistant to coking up the turbo bearings.

It is a known fact that all synthetic motor oils resist oxidation and degradation at higher operational temperatures than any dino oil can. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Good luck with your's in the future!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Remember, diesels lose the exact same percentage of power at altitude as gasoline engines do to simple physics....its been a known fact for over a hundred years now! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Cool, seems to me that there was a pretty good discussion on this thread and it didn't get deleted.

Maybe Jim got something out of it ... maybe not. He stuck it out though.

The usual suspects got into it and hung on too. I think a newB or two, to the oil thang, get into it too ...not sure if they hung in or not but, they got in it.

Funny thing about this tractor internet thing ... from my short time here, I see only folks that have pioneered their own life, which includes being ten feet tall and bullet proof from time to time ... it's hard, and maybe futile, to throttle that for ingestion by "everyone".

Sorry for the ramble ... just drinking factory beer while waiting for the sun to get to a place where it's not poking me straight in the eye so I can get to moving some more dirt.

Cheers!

Well Jim, I hope your happy. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Are you satisfied with the responses? Do you now know exactly what you want to do? Was it more then what you wanted? Are you still confused? Will you stick with a standard oil? Will a synthetic be your choice? Will you be getting your oil analyzed? Most importantly, did you know that gsxr1100 has a Lexus (ES)? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Best wishes in your selection, you asked for it!

Mr. _RaT_,

Cruel, Very Cruel. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Jim asks a simple little question about oil. Whoops is there such a thing? Well there may be but the answers ain't so simple! LOL! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

And will Jim ask another Oil question again. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Later,
Dan

Seemed like it wound up a pretty good thread ... only one post that was deleted as far as I know.

Satisfied: Yes
Exactly what to do: Yes
More than I wanted: Funny dialog
Confused: No
Standard: No
Synthetic: Yes (Rotella T Syn 5W-40)
Oil Analysis: Negative

New Rotella is currently in the engine and it's pleased. It's watery with just a tiny bit of heat and should be great when it's -30.
