( The hourly employees would beg to be laid off because they would draw 90 to 95% of their pay while laid off! Where is the logic in that? I don't know if this was something that UAW had something to do with or what. )

Yeah, I think the UAW had a lot to do with that. The unions in our area because of of our short construction season fought to get higher wages to cover for the layoff time, then turned around and fought the next term to get paid during this time and they would forgo unemployement. Now they get laid off, get paid and if they don't get called back they get unemployement. To me it is a system that makes one lazy, why should they work when they get paid not to?

Re: Delphi\'s Bankruptcy

My father worked as an engineer for his company for over 50 years. About 20 years into his career, the union employees struck for higher wages and benefits. The company was having trouble making ends meet at that point, and had already laid off or terminated about 20% of their salaried workers, because due to the union contracts, they could not lay off any union employees. The result? 6 months after trying to renegotiate, the company closed that location and moved the factory out of state. It was that or shut down completely. So, all the local people - not just the union workers - lost their jobs, except for the few willing to locate to the other state. How did this benefit the union workers? It didn't, nor anyone else in the community, including a large number of vendors who lost a rather large client and income for their company too. Bottom line, none of us exists in a vacuum anymore, all our decisions affect others, and this needs to be thought about when making these huge changes....

"I only have one comment to say; without direct labor, you would'nt even have a indirect labor job."

Let's Roll,

You are in for a big surprise.
Your job can be outsourced by those people in "indirect labor".
There is always someone willing to do your job for less money. In this economy it's up to you and your coworkers to provide incentive for this not to happen.

The times - they are a-changin'.

There is always someone willing to do another's job for less. Well for the most part. You see union contracts prevent manufactures from using other people for the most part. So what does the manufactures do, they just shut the plant down and move to another country. Mexico just loves us because we have moved so many manufacturing plants there and one thing I could never understand is how a manufacture can ship product to other countries such as China or what ever and then have the product shipped back to the US and it still being cheaper than if we would have produced it just ourselves.

Some time ago my wife worked for a financial services company They had a municipal bond group that worked on commission. These guys made a ton of money. They did so well that they got their contracts renegotiated to include guarantees. Guess what happened. Yup the group stopped making money buy the guys kept getting payed. There is a problem with any system that pays people for screwing up and it doesn't matter if they are wheels or cogs.

Yup. Add ADA, FMLA, and other alphabet laws/regulations taken to their silly extreme, and they will bring a productive company to it's knees in a hurry.

Re: Delphi\'s Bankruptcy

If the USA could cut wages and benefits down until we were competitive with foreign labor it would surely put a dent in illegal imigration. On the other hand who are we going to be able to sell our goods and services to? Just imagine being a doctor, lawyer or accountant if all the working people are poor. Maybe they could pay with chickens or maybe eggs.
