Deluxe Hood Guard

You're right, Roy. I did sell it.

But, I plan to modify the grill guard on my 110 in a very similar way that I reworked my JD 970 grill.

Heavier extruded grating than the JD deluxe grill guard and 3/8" x 1-1/2" flat stock braces behind the extruded grating.

'Course the design idea came more or less from the JD grill guard. If I make a move up to a cabbed 4000 - it will have the deluxe grill guard!! :thumbsup:

The deluxe guard still has a opening you can get to at the bottom, don't ask me how I know.

Ahhhh, let me guess. You have a JD 4120......... and hopefully didn't have a puncture thru the opening.

I went through the same thing with my dealer. After about 20 minutes, they quoted me $1300. I built my own, for under $20 and it's built a heck of a lot better than the cheesy sheet metal junk you get from the dealer! I'll put up pictures of it as soon as I get our new computer.

Matthew 3120;
I thought you worked at northland at one point. That's why they are knowledgeable !!!!!!!!!!!
Some of the parts people dealerships hire are not positive reflections on their employer. When they say I never heard of it ... I say is it too much work to get the parts book open to the section and I will point it out ? The dumb look usually will chase me away to another person unless I'm up for the challenge. If its a relative.... there is no hope for change.

Getting back to the hood guard...... Mr. MIG Welder will fashion any design one could dream up. " Custom is king ! "

Fortunately, no puncture. The previous owner warned me as he had to straighten out the grill slightly as did I. Back to initial post, sorry, but it would not be hard for a good welding shop to add expanded metal to a typical standard guard or fabricate one from scratch that is heavy-duty. A nice JD shade of powdercoat would top it off.

I don't know if the dealer parts system is the same as the online version I use, but today I was looking to price out the side guards (and build a heavier longer center piece myself) and the deluxe guard isn't listed under the 300cx. I finally found it for the 400cx. Might be why these guys have trouble finding it.

400 mounts are different but the actual guard is the same to a 300. $160 for the two sides.

If you can push something through all the radiators in a JD 4520, the radiators alone are a bit more than $1400. It's $1254 if you also want a new hood :confused2:...

If I had a loader on it, I would have a hood guard. My Kubota B21 TLB has a sort-of guard that was original factory/design that saved the day once (and that was enough!). There's lots of metal on the front of that vs. the just plastic front of the 4520. Agree with OP get the most deluxe guard you can, and then take it to a welding shop and gussy it up some.

Thanks for posting that pic. That area is where I poked a stick through the screen. The stick didn't go through to the battery, or past to the oil cooler and radiator. But made me more cautious pushing into a brush pile. Have intended (??) to get a better protective guard built, but it hasn't happened yet. Maybe this thread will get it done. Might just go out and measure it up now. :D

I fell for the "deluxe" hood gaurd for about $260 with the tractor (3720) purchase last year. By the end of the summer, the lack of grill protection down low was readily apparent, and the gaurd itself was dented in a few places, obviously made too light of rolled metal (not expanded). I was able to straighten the grill corrugated metal ( aluminum I think! ), and then added a much better-coverage version of the center section. Mine is built with actual expanded metal, about 12 gauge thick and TOUGH to get to conform to the frame. and the coverage is complete now. Have pics here somewhere...
