We ate a lot of chicken, rice and beans to keep that house.

MossRoad, what is interesting about this statement is how cheap chicken is to buy in the last few decades. Back in the 30's, one of the most dangerous man in the US according to FDR was Huey Long. The other was Douglas MacArthur. If FDR was not correct on this opinion he was pretty danged close. Huey had a campaign slogan to the effect that if he was elected President everyone would have a chicken in the pot. One was rich if they had chicken once a week. Course if it was in the pot they most have been stewing it since the chicken was so tough. :D

As it stands right now, electric cars will not be feasable for about 20 years. Our aging power grid can barely keep up to the demand now. Remember the blackout on the east coast a few years ago? The rolling blackouts in California? Now try everybody hooking up a battery charger or two between 5 and 7 o'clock an night, along with running their air conditioners in the summer. We will need more power plants, I can hear the liberals belly aching already. And nobody wants a power plant in their backyard. They are trying to put a new power line from upstate NY to the NYC area and the fight is unreal. Nobody wants it coming anywhere near them. They are making up anything to stop or divert it. I think they found a distant cousin to the spotted owl nearby that was thought extinct for the last 1.687 million years, give or take a month. So, how many years for more power plants and upgrade the power grid? 20 years may be figuring on the early side.
Finally someone brings in this truth - you and dmccarty. The whole grid and power generation will need an upgrade to support a substantial, and extremely rapid rise in demand. For real, nation scale viability of electric cars everything must be optimized to get past the 8 thousand % energy storage advantage pet offers over Li-ion batteries. Lets see....- that means solar cell bodies, batteries not yet invented [or supercaps], regen braking, HD grid, and still a little engine to keep you from getting stranded in the dark.

That's what we were taught in elementary school. I personally feel that in the last 75 years Washington is more of an oligarchy than a representative democracy. [[[I'd love to see a poll of how many Americans feel that they have any impact on federal government policy. I'd love even more to hear how those who answered 'yes' think that they do so.]]]
Low level irritant deserving punishment.

You might want to get that checked out. If you're having the same thoughts as me, you should be concerned.
You see, I used to be normal, but I feel much better now.

The old GM EV1 might not have been perfect but it was good enough to give GM a glimpse of the future and it scared the **** out of them.
More conspiracy paranoia. There wasn't a market for the car back then.

Anyone who thinks a corporation can create an assembly line to create a vehicle, any vehicle, in less than 2 years is nuts....or believes in conspiracy theories. Not to mention it was a business decision. Why would someone buy a hybrid, with it's premium price, when they can buy a fuel efficient car, with no price premium? Did you ever calculate the payback period for the battery powered premium? It's years. GMs business decision turns into a conspiracy to keep electric vehicles off the market. Jeez.

And to say there's been no progress. I guess a 430 hp Corvette getting 25 mpg on the highway is no progress.

Dominion Power in Virginia has asked for a 18% rate increase starting this July... THATS going to HURT us retired folks on fixed income! I believe the power is generated at North Anna Nuclear Power Plant.

GM heavily subsidized the EV-1 and they lost significant money on each and every one of them. Pretty stupid business plan to move that to large scale production.

Make up your mind. In your previous post (#94) you said it could be done in 18 - 24 months.

Maybe it's a good thing if people stopped shopping.
Look where most of the products are being made anyway. This goes for our everyday products, groceries, the oil and gas we use...everything man. Most of us have way more than we need anyway. A little self reliance goes a long ways in resurrecting our economy. I think it's a much needed healing process we need.
