Designing and Building a backhoe, Need Help!!!!

John,
thanks for the picture. It sure looks like there's a pretty big change in bucket movement available with those three holes. In the picture, it looks like it's in the full curl postion at that hole setting, right? Sometime if you could do a picture at full "uncurl" in that hole it would help too. It seems that something close to having the bottom of the bucket parallel to the dipper arm is about as much uncurl (there must be a better term /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif ) as I've seen, but perhaps yours has even more at this setting?

Appreciate the effort and input, will really help me when I re-do mine.

thanks again, Andrew.

Andrew,

Here's both positions, side by side. That bucket backside in the uncurled position doesn't look too vertical here but if you could see the whole tractor, the dipper really isn't in a normal dig position. As you reach back 35 degrees with the dipper, the back becomes vertical.

To others going thru what you have in designing these type of linkages, I'd recommend making cardboard scale models of the links' silhouettes, pin them together with thumb tacks at the pivot points, and run them thru their range of motion.

Good luck with your BH.

John

John,
thanks for the pictures. I was looking, but don't seem to have a picture of mine uncurled, but I think it's not too far off what yours has, so maybe I'm not so far off. When I was digging my first "test hole" I was trying to get a vertical back, and figured I'd like to be able to get deeper than I was able. I'll have to take some next time I have it "fired up".

To design my linkages I did some spreadsheets to calculate the movement. For the bucket linkage, I used these for the first link, and then did the second ones on paper (I didn't have the patience to try to work out a spreadsheet in one go /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif ). The spreadsheets were interesting too, as I could look at how the speed and force changed through the range of motion, and could change the endpoints so that I moved the force to where I thought it would be needed most.

I did do scale paper models, with drawing pins for the pivots. They helped a lot too to confirm I was close. I didn't do the vertical hole test case, so missed that one.

thanks again, Andrew

I to am from W NY and wanting to build my own back hoe. I just started to look for a good one to copy and found a few I would like mine to look like, bush hog has a very nice looking hoe as does prarie dog. Going to look at these and just take measurements. Let me know how you are doing.

Firel7 One of the best designs I have seen from scratch was featured on machine builders.net by f350ca. Please contact him and I am sure your day will be enlightened. Don't forget to share with the rest of us who are still " tuned in " the final results. I have looked at the 6-8k machines on the market and believe they can be improved upon while getting the purchase price in reason for the average user. Good Luck jr

Couldn't agree more ... Greg did a great job on his hoe. Here's a link to the topic on MBN that covers some of the build. There's some pictures in the photo gallery there too.
