I have been focusing on clearing the rear of my new construction house and planting the yard back there but got sick of looking at this weed patch out front today. Think clay baked dry in slabs filled with cobble stones, think thick stalk prairie grass the builder threw down to control erosion, think packed even harder driving the tractor over it 100 times. I rigged the new Landpride RTR1250 and had at it. Man that first pass liked to rattle my teeth out, slowed down the RPM's to 1800 and crawled, the LandPride spit softball size cobble stone left and right. Next few passes got easier. I wedged a big hunk of root in there at one point, could not dislodge it the tine had bit about half way through. Hmmm...lowered the tiller to the ground in neutral, backed up and it fell right out. Tossed it on my burn pile with some satisfaction and got on with the job. Pretty happy with the performance of the tiller and tractor.

Here's some before and after pics:

That looks awesome ! I bet it didn't even take that long to finish, did it?
I'd love to have one of those tillers, I would do the same thing to my front yard, just can't swing that big of an expense right now.

Nice looking job.Did you find the B2920 to have lots of power for the tiller?

Took about 4 hours before the rain chased me to the garage. A few areas need a couple high speed passes at 540. Yeah that tiller dented my wallet pretty good.

Plenty with more to spare, she's got some grunt. I can't imagine a tougher dirt to till and it powered right through. Does toss you around a bit breaking up that top layer, I guess a 500lb tiller bouncing around will do that. lol

I've discovered over the years to go slow with smaller bites and the time is about the same with less jerking.
I had a B2320 geared and hated it when tilling because the tiller stopped when the clutch was engaged where the HST would stop or go fast with the foot pedal and the tiller kept on tilling. I liked stopping while tilling and then creep and stop with the harder sections and go faster when I hit a looser patch of ground which wouldn't happen with the B2320 geared. It's gone!
Looks good.

Looks good, that's a lot of work there.

For cheaper approaches, I've used a disk or box blade with ripper teeth to break up the ground and then drag a 10' section of chain link fence around with some heavy logs on it to hold it down. Slow process (and a lot of dust) but cheap.

Just watch out around your trees, as most of the roots are close to the surface around the outer edges of the trees, and if you cut to many up at once, you may kill the tree. Have the same plan as you, and just got my RTA 1250 tiller for my B3200, used it to level some but need to more.

Looks great. I didn't get a tiller as the local rental place had a 50" 3pt for rent. Couldn't justify its use to buy.

Well guess what, I go last week to reserve it, and turns out they just sold it and won't get another...:mur:
