I've got a hydraulic DC power pack that calls for Dexron II for outdoor applications. The Auto parts store has Dexron III.

Are these equivalent?

Can I just use Universal Tractor Fluid? It would be nice to just stock one jug for all of my hydraulic stuff.

As a general statement, I would say yes, Dexron III will sub in for Dexron II, but I would probably also check the spec sheet of the oil, it will show something like this

http://www.pzlqs.com/Tech/Pdsheet/D...DexronIIIMerconAutomaticTransmissionFluid.pdf

And it shows meeting the requirements of Dexron II which should avoid any questions.

Can you use UTF? probably, might want to check with the manufacturer and verify that. If it was mine and it was home I probably would, if it was at work, I would call the manufacturer and get something in writing saying I could.

Dexron II was replaced by Dexron III. Dexron III is backwards compatible to Dexron II.

Dexron VI is the new GM transmission fluid. On the bottle it says it is backwards compatible with Dexron III and Dexron III-H. Pricey, $7.55 per quart. The price per quarts leads me to believe it is synthetic. Dexron VI comes in all the new GM vehicles, so read the dip stick labeling prior to adding transmisson fluid in a new GM vehicle. GM Service Tech advised Dexron III and III-H not compatible with VI.

We just got in a shipment of Dexron VI, and it came in under the Dexron III numbers.

Had not heard of it before it showed up, and have to get smarter / documentation on it before I start getting questioned.

Anybody seen a website etc. that explains the Dexron numbering system?

Thanks everyone.

I had a jug of 50% ATF 50% 30wt. engine oil that my mechanic suggested I use in my Chevy S-10 that I no longer own. I put that in to test and flush the system.

I did call a dealer and he said that any ATF would work. He also said that Tractor Fluid would work just fine.

Before I mount the pump I'll drain the 50/50 mix and put in UTF since I have it already.

That's better than I did the other day.

I went to wall mart and 2 auto parts stores and didn't see a can of DEXTRON anything on the shelves.

I have 4 pick ups that specify DEXTRON.

They sell Dexron at NAPA. I would also try your local GM dealership.
