Well, I found my port in the same place as yours. I just didn't remove enough covers. The adapter you posted in post 7 looks to be correct. I noticed only 6 of the 9 pins on my port have pin terminals, the other three are empty.
Attached pics of the jumper in post 7, my port and a doc file showing side by side.

That sounds right for a J1939 protocol .

Can't open attachments on my mobile.. Will check later this evening there should be ground ,power , data +, data - and two OEM programming pins...question is are they in the right locations ? ....a simple voltage check should tell ground and battery ( on a cat the key must be in on POS to read ) hopefully the wireing diagram will show all pinouts

The Cat industrial adapter looks like the right plug but the J1939 uses PGN protocol instead of PID used by most automotive scanners. I see no mention of this protocol in my scanner owners manual so looks like I'd have to buy another scanner. Not sure what software would be required in another scanner or whether it would be affordable.

Unfortunately no, largest truck I have now is a 3/4T Crew Cab HD. I really don't have a need for a tractor diagnostic tool but it just irks me that the tractor world hasn't gone the way of the automotive industry allowing the end user to easily diagnose any problems with a reasonably priced tool.

I've retired and no longer drive large trucks but haven't given up my CDL. I never know when someone might need an extra driver. Still enjoy working on my own vehicles though.

If you decide to go further and get a working diagnostic tool for tractors let us all know.
Thanks for reviving my memory about this.

No, 6.0L gas.
I may buy the adapter and try it with my reader. I have used it on 3/4 and 1T diesel trucks to clear and reset codes, air bag sensors, ABS etc.
