Mahindra 1533
I recently purchased a 1533 HST with approximately 400 hours. I have put about another 100 hours on it and I now have the dreaded flashing Malfunction Indicator Lamp. My car OBDII reader indicates a P1801 code. I have located a detailed repair manual for Mahindra tractors online and it refers to using Garuda J2534 software to correctly read these codes.

My problems/questions are:
1. Not sure if car OBDII will read codes accurately
2. This code says return to dealer for repair. I would rather diagnose problems then but the parts from dealer.
3. All of my local dealers have recently closed. Closest one over 2hr drive 1-way.
4. Is is possible to purchase this Garuda (or equivalent) software to diagnose or re-flash computer if necessary.
I would like to keep this tractor for many years but paying for a 4 hr towing expedition every time this light comes on is not desirable.

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Typically the tractor stuff doesn’t have the sales volume to warrant an aftermarket manufacture tackling the programming. Maybe somewhere, somehow someone can locate the software- but it’s a needle in a haystack. The only other rabbit hole to chase would be the Bosch angle- since it’s their EFI something may work that is programmed for those. This is the ugly truth with all the CUTs.

Henry Ford was rumored to have said he would give away the cars if he had a monopoly on the repair and parts. CUT manufacturers were listening!!

Your car OBD reader is probably not giving a correct reading for the trouble you are experiencing. Some can be flashed with code updates. It is unlikely you'll find a source for a download of the Gaurda codes. You could price a Mahindra OBD reader at the dealer but the price would probably be prohibitive. Short of buying a locally supported tractor your options are somewhat limited.

At the very least, you need a scan tool with the Heavy Duty protocol. The garuda tool was advertised as an option in the brochure with some of the bigger tractors. When I asked about it, I was told its not for sale. And the software is obviously not for sale. Mahindra apparently has some type of agreement with Bosch. The fuel injectors, pump, etc are all made by Bosch but you will have to go thru Mahindra to buy them. They are not found going direct thru Bosch. One of the many reasons I would never get involved with either one again.

Unfortunately it’s the same for John Deere, Kubota etc. The only difference is their were some rumors the Mahindra was OBDII compliant. Do a web search on John Deere and their software. They were/are claiming when you buy the tractor it only includes a lease or license on the software and any change or repair done without authorization (dealer) voids the warranty and worse. Bad deal all the way around.

Thank goodness the OBD “laws” were passed many years ago. That gave customers access to their own vehicles. Unfortunately it doesn’t hold true for trucks and equipment- sad. But at least the big stuff (like Detroit Diesel etc) you can find the diagnostic software.

I also have the MIL on my 300 hour 1533 shuttle and my dealer has also closed. Can you help me with the diagnostic connector location? Thanks

Ranchito..

The connector is located on the right side of the engine (standing in front of tractor / facing engine) tucked behind the wire harness.
Mine has a rubber cover on it.

Update me if you have any success.

Thanks for the reply. My MIL is still flashing also and the tractor is running fine. I will add that my machine spends far too much time idling and running with a light load. As the temp gauge stays at the cold end, on a hunch I looked at the cooling system. I pulled the thermostat and temp sensor and tested both. The thermostat opened when it should and the sensor seemed to give credible readings when heated in a pan of water. Later I found that there is a programming fix for this, but without a local dealer and no trailer, I'll pass on bringing the service man out for this. I just know that the gauge is at operating temperature with 1-2 bars showing, usually just one. I have tried pulling codes with various scan tools (I have 5 of them) and nothing usable is read. Also attempting to clear the codes seems to have no effect as the light is flashing on a restart indicating a hard fault or my attempt to clear the codes is not getting it done. I also pulled the EGR for inspection (many of the DTC codes relate to EGR) and although it looked very good, I gave it a quick cleaning and reinstalled. I have found the CRD manual lists MIL light condition (off, flash, steady) for many of the DTC codes and I started to put together a list of these. Future troubleshooting will be confined to the sensors and actuators that flash the lamp. I will report back any progress.
