Did I marry the right woman or what?

I think you're looking a bit small unless your just maintaining.

Hire out any heavy clearing to bigger equipment.

Yes, you are very lucky about your wife, I just wish she had some "green" in her bloodlines! :) :) :)

If you notice, most of the guys replying go right past your question and start discussing tractor options. Goes to show that these guys care more about tractors than women. Bunch of sickos! :)

I too think you are on the right path with a 35Hp CUT. From what little I've seen, horses do far more damage than R1's :) .

And now for a minority report: I now have 4x4 and R-4's (prefer them over R-1's.) I find that there is a degree of traction where R-1 tires are noticeably better than R-4. I find in practice that this is a narrow range. As traction is reduced to the point that the R-4's spin too easily, just a little additional loss of traction and the R-1's spin too.

The upside of the R-4 is less damage to surface in virtually all situation's (except the narrow window between loss of traction for R-4 and loss of traction for R-1.)

If surface damage is not an issue get the most aggressive tires you can find (steel tires with giant lugs have great traction.) If you often operate in the "window" described above then you will be hapier with R-1 than R-4.

Turfs are more for lawnmowers, even lawn mowers with a 3PH on the back and or a recognizable tractor mfg logo painted on.

If uneven footing from tire tread impressions is the main worry then SHANE and others are correct in that horse foot imprints produce equally uneven footing but no apparent problems for the animals. R1's seem the best and most useful choice for your requirements as explained by others in this tread.

My wife was fine with me buying a tractor if I would show her how to run it!!

I had to convince my hubby to buy me the first tractor. He only had to see how much work I was able to do with it to be sold for life. :D

You just described our new land. We opted (I placed the order Friday!) for a JD 4320 (48hp). I compared the smaller body size of the 3000 series side by side, and decided that unless I went all the way down to a 2000 series, manueverability wasn't going to be that big of a difference. I opted for the larger tractor, for more stability, better ground clearance, and future options in case we want to clear more of the land in the future.

I went with R4's.

I guess i gotta give kudos to my wife as well. Beck when i was mowing with a 33hp tractor i needed a bigger one.. and was gonna get a 70hp ford 5000.. oldy but goody... she instead urged me to get a virtually new 90+ hp tractor that i mow with today.. my 7610s.. gald she did.. I love that tractor...
