I was not a member of the dark side but some of the commentary in this thread indicates there must have been a serious lack of tolerance on the part of many members.
Some are intolerant of intolerance ... and some are simply intolerant generally ...

I am surprised because I find TBN to be quite civil even when discussing different tractor brands. Well, most of the time.
Politics and religion have the tendency to bring out the worst in folks ... ;)

Can't see it. Not even older threads.

Feels like the teacher just made me go out and stand in the hallway!
You should see what they are writing about you now....:pullinghair:

Yes, I enjoy "the dark side" friendly politics. I don't take it too seriously, nor get offended by ignorant statements. If I did this world would drive me crazy.
An entirely reasonable approach ... the internet is, as a friend of mine likes to say, "the funny papers" ...

Utlimately, one has to be able to take a step back and laugh at it all ... otherwise, like you say, it will drive ya crazy.

Sometimes people have different outlooks and opinions, sometimes they have different facts, and conclusions.
Indeed ... and that is actually the (potential) value of a forum like this.

When it comes to name calling and insults, well, they've showed their hand and should be chastised.
As one of the guilty, you'll get no argument from me on that count.

I'm not sure about being banned.
It's all about the amount of T & E required to maintain and run a forum vs. the perceived benefit.

And that's a call that the site owners have to make.

Politics on a tractor website is a good place to get a pulse or sampling of regular people, versus those who would specifically visit a website devoted to news or a specific topic where everybody is of the same opinion.
Yup ... political and some topical news websites tend to be self-selecting ... a place like TBN is unique in regard in that it has a broad spectrum of political opinions and views.

Sometimes I wonder if my political opinions effect people's opinion of me on the tractor side of the website? I think of them as 2 very different places.
The key to building a civilized society is being able to separate out the commonalities that can be agreed upon from the differences that can't, and not letting the differences prevent one from agreeing on those things where agreement can be found.

If one can't there at least, there is no civilization possible.

It appears that possibly the worst of the worst, and you all know who I am referring to may be totally gone. And if so, good riddance.
"Thee worst of the worst" Hmmmm, now let see......who could that be? IT COULD BE........********, or **** ******?
I give up.....
You are going to send me a message and let me know who is actually the "worst of the worst" AREN'T YOU?

I'm off. Once I tried to be pleasant, but I tired of the ridicule I received for being progressive from the conservative folks. I joined in and ridiculed them as well. Many conservative folks only see ridicule if it is directed at them, they don't recognize their own ridiculing behavior directed toward others. Likewise, there is a "gang" behavior that piles on.
I well remember the day I finally got around to checking out FP a couple of years ago ... and remember quite well who was being "targeted" and how it being done and who was doing it ... ;)

As long as the liberal members were few in number and outnumbered by conservatives, it was not a big deal. Once the playing field leveled some in numbers, conservative folks didn't like that, and things turned nastier.
Funny how that works ain't it ?

I'd imagine it probably goes both ways tho', in the right circumstances ...

Well it was pleasant at times. I imagined this thread may be shut down as well... or perhaps a number of members permanently X'd!
One never knows ...

I have to laugh at some who say they were above the friendly politics section- they just didn't like to be contradicted, that's why they did not participate.
Yup ... people will often use any and all excuses to bail when they are confronted and challenged with things that they would rather not address.

Life is life, easy come, easy go. It was fun while it lasted.
Life goes on ... ;)

There are many respected members on here that never seem to post anything but helpful knowledge. There were also several members who over hundreds of posts never seemed to get to tractors

At least one has posted that he
had gotten bored with the same old stuff over and over.
and is apparently gone.

Unfortunately, from my viewpoint, I've seen several members who were not as thick skinned as I am who have totally abandoned providing great knowledge when the feeding frenzy of "those who know they are right regardless of facts" ganged up on them.

I never discuss religion or politics. Firstly, they are not subjects that I am very well versed in and second I am not overly interested in either one.

Extremely well said! I agree.

I love politics and enjoy discussing it, but refused to be a part of it on here because of how it changed how I felt about some of the people on here. Sometimes it's just better to focus on the positive and enjoy what we have in common then trying to win an argument. In my opinion, creating the Friendly Politics section on here was one of the biggest mistakes those who own and run this site could have ever made. And yes, I've been deleted and told to behave numerous times and I'm sure I'll cross the line again in the future.

Eddie

Good post, Eddie!
My membership hadn't been revoked (just checked), but I've had a more then a few posts removed.
Since I got the new job, I don't have as much time on TBN as I did a few months back...not by far! Other then older threads showing up on the "My Home" link, I haven't been following that forum regularly...can't say I miss it either.
