We started selling Amsoil diesel fuel additive at my work now. I am thinking about using it since I can get it at our cost. This is the stuff we carry and I can get it for about $3 a bottle.

Amsoil Diesel Concentrate Performance Fuel Additive

I am contemplating using it in my X740, but I am just wondering if it would make any real difference at all? Basically, just not sure if it is pointless to use or not.

Looking for any knowledge from those who know about additives!

Well the label states " Designed for use in heavy-duty diesel engines." does that include a x740 lawn mower?

I know I know. These little Yanmars are industrial grade diesel engines. I just figured since I can get the additive for next to nothing, maybe it is worth it to just keep the injectors cleaned and lubricated if anything?

You will have to try it to answer that question.

We use the WM 2 cycle TCWC oil as our diesel additive. On the 1983 JD 60 HP diesel I can see/hear no difference in the engine but the drops of water in the fuel filter will leave very fast. Now in the 1976 MF 60 HP the injector pump rattle does decrease to my ears.

What does your manual say about additives? I know what mine say's.

I am of the opinion that ALL injector pumps will last longer with some additional lubricant in the fuel.
Especially the older ones which tend to leak and give troubles related to the newer fuels (after ~ 2006-2009)
with lower sulphur content. Lots of truck driver and equipment operators buy these additives by the case all year long.

Some injector pump mechanics say to use ATF fluid. Others use some form of 2-cycle oil.
Google it...
Most (not all) injector pumps are lubricated ONLY by the fuel, and the new fuel is too clean.

I use Amsoil Diesel concentrate in all my diesels. My John Deere 3720, which has a Yanmar engine and my F250 which has a 6.7L diesel, etc. I am religious about it since the ultra low sulfur standards came out. I have not had any fuel related issues with any of my equipment.

The manual for my x748, and my 4720 say the John Deere additive is recommended for fuel of low or "unknown" lubricity. I think you could make a pretty good case that most fuels fall into the "unknown" catagory. I've always used the JD additive, but I have considered switching to Optilube. I would not be scared of any Amzoil product either.

I just looked in my manual tonight, and I can confirm you are correct. It actually does suggest using an additive.

Ever since Ultra Low Sulfur Fuel came into play, the quality of diesel isn't the greatest. The fuel itself has never been cleaner, but it also has never lacked so many properties it used to have, like lubrication. Sulfur used to do good things for your fuel injectors. However, I do know that it is EXTREMELY harmful to the environment.

I know Amsoil makes a top quality product, and they don't take their stuff lightly. I think I will start to run this stuff on my next tank. I plan to keep this tractor for a lot of years, so I am looking for the maximum life out of my machine.

I disagree with the "unknown" part, from all I have read. I KNOW the current diesel does not lubricate like it used to.
The stupid part to me is that the environmental folks done this to help, but it is now causing expensive injector pump failures.
So millions are now riding down the interstate with oil of some sort added to the tank. Is that good for the environment?

I use "Power Service" Diesel Fuel supplement in ever tank. 1.6 oz to each 5 gallon can. It has "SlickDiesel" lubricant and an anti-gel additive for the wintertime. About $11 to treat 100 gallons of fuel.

I use it in my 97 Dodge diesel. It received a good review some time ago in the TDR magazine. I put it in at each fillup.

For my tractors I have a 300 gallon off road tank. I use power service and biokleen each time I fill the 300 gallon tank. About once a year.

I think additives that provide lubricity are a good thing with the low sulphur fuel that has reduced lubricity.

WM TCW3 two cycle beats out Amwsoil diesel additive so we do the WM option.

Some folks call it snake oil I call it common sense.I use diesel additive in all of my equipment starting back in 1998.I use schaffers diesel treat or stanadyne additives.Never had a failure to start or any engine issues.Living in a cold climate(Michigan)I would call that a plus.coobie

Are you trying to start World War 3? :D Diesel fuel additives? You might as well ask what brand tractor is "the best."
I don't know how many gallons of fuel that little bottle will treat. I get the Lucas fuel additive for $22/gallon. I buy it from my fuel supplier or the Kenworth dealer. (same price) That one gallon will treat 400 gallons of fuel.

The small bottle I bought, which I think has 16 ozs, will treat 80 gallons it says. It only takes 1 OZ for 5 gallons. I use 5 gallon cans to get my diesel, so I just put 1 OZ into each before I go and fill them. That one bottle will likely last me an entire year. I hardly use any fuel with this machine. I am guessing I will put on 50-75 HRS a year.

Few if any fuel shops will recommend Power Service due to the reputation it earned years ago.

FPPF Total Power is my additive of choice.

Use what you want, believe what you want, but I don't really trust any other additive. I guess if I was out and could not find the FPPF I would run Stanadyne Performance Formula as a substitute.

FPPF Total Power did come in third in the research quoted above so it must be good.

You based on your listed equipment may just want to consider Wal-Mart's Super Tech Outboard 2-cycle TC-W3 that came in in 7th place vs Stanadyne that came in 8th out of 19 if you are out of FPPF since many WM stores are open 24/7.

While I can not hear any difference in the JD like in the MF I expect a quality diesel additive (ranked 8th or better in the lab tests quoted above) may add life to the fuel system.

I actually provided the product for the FPPF side of the test and know Arlen (the author) quite well. The product came through normal distribution supply chain. The results are quite interesting, but there are a few things that need to be said.

The Opti Lube product came from the lab and was not commercially available in the formulation tested at the time.

The FPPF choice of truck/bus SUV formula was a poor one in my opinion. Total Power is essentially the same formula but in more economical packaging. The SUV is what I call "yuppie" bottles. The stuff that the weekend warriors buy it truck stops based on marketing the size and cost of the bottle. Total Power is much lower cost per gallon.

The fact that Stanadyne Lubricity Formula scores so low puzzles me. It should not be that low.

FPPF Fuel Power plus lubricity contains the same lubricity additive as the rest of the lineup. Why did it score so low?
