Proper way to check antifreeze condition

Finely got around to changeling out factory antifreeze. Not for sure what type was in in from the factory , .Manuel calls for an "PG" low tox but this stuff was green ? Going on my third year and the antifreeze was already reading ( .6 ) volts DC .notice a small amount of slime , antifreeze had only been topped off during dealer service , so not really sure where the slime came from...my Manuel did called for a fluid change after one year to remove contaminants from system which I didn't notice until I was looking for coolant specs ... ...anyway..flushed three times with distilled water and refilled cooling system with Peak Final Charge it's a reddish/orange in color ... ran out of time for today after letting tractor run for 20 minutes or so to mix coolant I shut it down for today , will check voltage and refractometer readings tomorrow after work , would like to thank the everyone that shared information , really helped a lot in making my decision as to what type of antifreeze to use.....

Proper way to check antifreeze condition

I have never checked coolant with a voltmeter, but would like to look into it. Do you have the reference chart referred to in the picture posted?
I do check the concentration with a refractometer, which I find to be much more accurate.

I will generally check for DC and AC voltage ....many things can cause stray currents to flow within an coolant system , dissimilar metals and out of range PH balance , missing block ground ,faulty alternator can induce AC currents. Just to mention a few .....its a simple test used along with test strips and refractometer...cheap Insurance just my humble opinion ...

I decided on Peak final charge in my parent bore engine , fleet charge is an excellent choice for a wet sleeves....

Coolant/Antifreeze is an Organic Acid Technology (OAT), globally formulated, ethylene glycol based coolant, which uses organic acid inhibitors (non 2-EH) to provide guaranteed protection for all cooling system metals.

Close enough for government work

The guys are right about the wet liner issue. I bet very few guys on this site have wet liner diesels; therefore any old anitfreeze will work just fine.

You will see a lot of talk on ford diesel forums about cavitation and DCA, etc.. beacuse all the old 7.3 L V8 diesels, and power strokes are wet liners. They do need the aditives.

We had ths discussion before over in the blue zone:

Bottom line is cheapo antifreeze and DI water is all you need for most diesels.

Fred

The above is not quite correct. The cylinders in Ford 7.3 Powerstroke Diesels that can suffer from porous cylinder walls due to cavitation are bored directly in the cast iron blocks. No liners unless they致e been installed during a rebuild.

Correct .....its just a matter of do you want to change your coolant every two to three years or every five to six years ..

For Christ's sake - just use what your Owners Manual recommends and be done with it. Why all the smoke, mirrors and nonsensical confusing scenarios.

Wow!!! Was I flaming or what. My shoulder hurt like crazy at this point - I should have just let it slide. Apologies.
Owners Manual calls for propylene low tox antifreeze
Found some small amount of slime in system while flushing
After 2 1/2 years of service ...factory reccomend fluid is not always the best .....
Propylene gycol oxidizes when exposed to air and heat. When this occurs lactic acid is formed. If not properly inhibited, this fluid can be very corrosive.[citation needed] Protodin is added to propylene glycol to act as a buffer, preventing low pH attack on the system metals. It forms a protective skin inside the tank and pipelines which helps to prevent acid attack that cause corrosion.

Besides cooling system breakdown, biological fouling also occurs. Once bacterial slime starts the corrosion rate of the system increases. In systems where a glycol solution is maintained on a continuous basis, regular monitoring of freeze protection, pH, specific gravity, inhibitor level, color and biological contamination should be checked routinely.
