Diesel emissions

Don't read me wrong. I am all for clean air and better running tractors. But I have been told that most of the pollution from diesel engines come from ocean going freighters. They are not subject to the EPA. I often see that people don't look at the big problem. Like plastic straws. Some people get all upset about plastic straws but never think about the plastic in the ocean coming from fishing nets. But I have no problem with a paper straw.
Before changing any thing, make sure you know what you are doing. And make sure that it will not cause other problems. When I was young, I got a new carb for my car, knowing that it was going to fix it and give it a lot more power. A year later, I was told that the problem was a bad cam. All the problems with the carb was money and time out the window.

You wouldnt if you had to work on them or pay for the repairs. I work for a equipment dealer and we work more now on emmissions related issues than we do any other thing on new dirt equipment. I will never own a piece of equipment that runs DPF or DEF.

This is what I am hearing from techs I know... even my Kubota Dealer is keeping a fleet of L3800 for his rental stock where normally he would have sold them a long time ago... said they are rock solid and he can't say the same for the 3901... so if the Dealer has reservations it is at least cause to think.

That not very encouraging. From my research on CUT's, these DPF's have been in place now for 4 full years. If'n they ain't got em figured out by now, they got big problems with their "smart" folks.
I hear all the talk of such wonderful engineering behind Kubota products.........

you know what they say about believing everything you hear

Not just Kubota. Its everyone from CAT, Deere. komatsu , you name the brand and they have issues with the emissions systems. And its not just design issues. Its system issues. Especially sensitive are the ones that take DEF fluid. If the PH isnt right in some DEF fluid you get and it puts the system into limp mode. Cure is to pull def tank and lines and flush out, reinstall with fresh DEF fluid then bleed system to get back working. Thats a 6 hour job on some of the excavation equipment we work on.

Never heard of Limp Home Mode until it happened to several friends with new Diesel Pickups... these were expensive rigs bought brand new for business...

Not to mention software upgrades and recalls...

Maybe it is me... but why does a 2018 Tractor, Car, Truck or my Refrigerator require Software?

I admit to being jaded... it comes from seeing very expensive medical equipment that becomes scrap once manufacturer support ends... Medical Lasers, Sterilizers, C-Arms, Fluoroscan... etc.

They literally become worth less than scrap as often disposal is regulated... like with an X-Ray machine I recently decommissioned... it was working fine... just as it always did but the cost of the service contract made it economically obsolete.

yessir, I would agree to "all of them". I really didn't intend to single out Kubota, but was replying to the gentleman who posted about Kubota.

You know they pretty much have the fuel injection figured out and especially in vehicles. These new vehicles are pretty much just start and go now days. Only time ya need to open the hood is to add washer fluid for the most part.

I think adding all these emission "devices" are forcing the engines run in a way they weren't designed to run. I look for them to come up with totally redesigned power plants for these fresh air breathers someday. Reliability is a pretty strong word for today's consumers. The ones who have never had to work on their machine for ANYTHING.

User error...or something along those lines.

How do YOU use your tractor? Is that what they planned on for use? Or more importantly, to pass the emmissions test did they have to do something that doesn't work well in the real world?

VW's WILL pass the emmissions test - just don't turn the steering wheel. That was how they defeated the 'system' - the emmissions test is done on a dyno - the car is tied down and the steering wheel wheel doesn't turn - a signal to put the car into 'clean mode'.

Won'r work in the real world where you have to drive the vehicle.

Are emmissions tests done in 15F weather on a cold start with a tractor running 20 min? On summer diesel with additives? I bet not - but that's how they're used.

Elec cars will be the norm in 10 years.
Tractors and such will likely follow.

They have battery powered tools now that out perform 120v tools. At a competitive price. DeWalt and others sell them.

Your car has 2000 moving parts and uses $2000 a year, or more, in fuel. An elec car has 20 moving parts and uses $300 in 'fuel' to go the same distance.

And that price/performance ratio is improving at 18% a year..5 years ago that was 13% a year...

America converted from a horse powered society to a car powered one in less than 15 years - and we had to build roads and a gasoline industry, plus the car industry, to do that. Converting to elec cars is a piece of cake in comparison.

Avg price a new car in USA is now $33k. A Chevy Bolt...is $36k, 238 mile range. Nissan Leaf is $29,900, 151 mile range. We are about to hit the tipping point. And they are what, $2500 a year CHEAPER to run than any gas car...and no more oil changes! It's almost a no-brainer on economics alone - a gas car is 30k, 30k in gas over a decade - $60k spent - an elec car is 30k and 3k in fuel..$33k. HALF PRICE!

I hope to get 5 or 6 more years from my car...I bet my next one is electric. I've had several friends with prius and volts - nothing but raves. Friend leased a volt for 2 years - bought gas 3 times. Got to /from work and store and everywhere else (except trips) on elec alone. I'd buy a used elec car in an instant.

As more elec cars are out there more people will experience and want one.

I keep seeing all these posts with "my tractor has this " and "my tractor has that ". Unless you stipulate what year and HP such quotes mean nothing.

My 1983 ? yanmar 3110 has no emissions.
I love the smell of diesel in the morning, as well as some love the smell of coffee in the am

I have no idea what my 2013 mx5100 has. I know it doesn't have DPF or use DEF

I was going to buy a used 2013 60 hp kubota but the guy said it had DPF. So, I went with the 5100 he had
