Diesel Fuel Additive for Yanmar Engine

I've a 9 year old 4010 and a fairly new Isuzu 12.5 kw generator that has about the same size engine on both. Rarely have I used a fuel additive in the 4010 and haven't at all in the Isuzu. I do buy 5% bio diesel from Exxon. Think they put some additives in their fuel because we get better fuel economy in the winter from Exxon than from Kroger diesel (less expensive suppliers probably just use kerosene to get pour point control in winter). This is better fuel economy on our 2010 Jetta TDI; can't measure accurately enough on the 4010 to tell, as it depends greatly on how hard it has been run on a tank. Only time I had a fuel problem was the ONE TIME I used plain diesel from Exxon. Wax came out of solution and plugged the tank outlet on the 4010. The Isuzu has a monster 60 gallon tank that I now use as my tractor supply tank.

In my area, I buy my fuel at the local Husky truck stop. Good fuel (consistently the best mileage), and fresh - they often need 2 deliveries per day to keep their tanks stocked.

Small quiet stations scare me in terms of diesel. Even if it starts out as decent fuel, the concern is how long the diesel is sitting in their tank.

OK, last evening I picked up 5 gallons of Koch "Gold" Diesel Fuel (higher cetane, lubricity) and spiked it with 2.5 ounces of Opti-Lube XPD additive. Tractor was down to 1/4 tank fuel left (5.5 gallon capacity), I filled it up & went mowing. I finished in about an hour, did not hear any difference in engine noise, etc.

I will post again after a couple of more tankfuls of the same recipe. Reminder - all MN retail diesel fuel outlets are supposed to dispense 10% biodiesel per ASTM D975 definition, so maybe this makes no difference. I am more after the higher cetane at this point. This engine is kind of noisy, clatters a lot. Quiets down a little after hard run, but still noticable.

I use Amsoil Diesel Fuel concentrate in all my diesel equipment. Any good quality product such as those mentioned above will work.

This is recently reformulated to be even better. It's now called AMSOIL Diesel Clean. I would use a diesel fuel additive every single tank if it were mine.

I am on 2nd tank of "Gold" Premium Diesel Fuel which I spiked with Opti-Lube XPD additive at winter dosage (2x summer dosage) as per the "Spicer Report".

Both fills were at app. 1/4 tank fuel left in tractor.

So far, I don't hear noticable reduction in engine "rattle", but there is no doubt it is using less fuel. So at least the higher cetane is good for something?

Hard to argue with better fuel efficiency, Eh !

Long term (for us Buy and Hold equipment guys) the other thing I like is the reduced deposits/better hygiene in the fuel system when using XPD or other decent solutions.

You know diesels - as you described, you have a relatively simple engine, compared to today's complex diesels. I'm all for keeping old-school clean, and well lubed. I wouldn't expect noise level to change much, as that is mostly a function of the engine design, IMO.

Enjoy, sounds like you have been.

One of the best tanks I've had in my road diesel was from Exxon (Esso up here), but I find Husky more consistent for mileage. (Saying Esso is decent/good, just that I prefer Husky).

I'm far enough north of you that even if I didn't treat fuel all year already, I'd definitely do something in the winter time. I mostly don't mind fiddling with mechanical stuff, just not at the side of the road when it's -40 out !

It's possible that with the Biodiesel being a newer style fuel, they have tighter controls/inspection in place than with the regular diesel. Newer equipment could be a factor, but newer production processes often tend to get more human/QA attention than older production processes.

Nice to have the 60 gallon tank, and exercising the tractor will help you turn that fuel over too - good setup
