Diesel Fuel question.....

If you have trouble buying/locating dyed (non taxed) fuel you may also want to consider applying for a refund to your state agency for the state tax.. here in VA you fill out a form and submit it and the receipts to Dept of Motor Vehicles for any fuel purchased tax paid that was used for non-highway purposes (lawn mower, tractor, boat, generator, etc)..

I am not sure how (IF?) you can get a refund on the federal tax ($0.244/gal) though..

AlanB--Thanks for the thorough post. My main purpose in posting was to make sure that I could use the fuel from the local station. I am 5 miles out of town, and I will be asking the farmer that cash rents the ground where he gets his fuel next time I see him.

I have been using about 25 gallons/month since I purchased the tractor in June. I imagine that would be typical except during hay making times. Not much rain here this summer, not much hay either.

Thanks, all, for posting, I believe my question has been answered.

25 gallons a month would make me want to have a drum and pump on-site.

Hope it all works well for you.

No matter where you live there should be a way for you to get off road red diesel.
Some body in your area is buying and using it so there is no reason i can see that you can't do the same.

You can call the folks that supply the large farms with diesel. In the yellow pages - diesel fuel - . Have them install a tank, or do it yourself (if you are allowed).

1*I can't believe the California farmers and contractors are using on road diesel.
2*Call the people selling diesel to the California farmers and contractors. The farmers and contractors have to be getting their fuel somewhere.
There is no reason you can't get yours from the same source either directly or indirectly.

Why not, there is no such thing as off road diesel fuel in California since the only choice is ULSD for both on and off road????

All the farmers and contractors outside of California throughout the rest of the USA are now using last years on-road 500ppm sulfur diesel fuel anyhow......

Nope...
We can only apply for a tax refund on the fuel highway taxes...that is if you qualify as a bona fide agricultural user....not just an "off road" user. So guys like me out here are SOL. I use around ± 200 gallons a year for screwing around my property, but not for farming.
