Oil & Fuel Diesel Motor Oil?

I believe any oil that has a "CF" rating should be appropriate for diesel engines. I run Mobil 1 in my b2400 and have noticed the oil light goes out much quicker upon starting, especially when cold.

This topic of engine oil is a perennial one. My summary, perhaps imperfect, as I understand it is as follows:

You MUST use diesel engine oil. (assuming you have a diesel engine)

It is always marked as "for diesel engines

Diesel oil has a "C" rating... as in CF, the C means commercial but I remember it as "compression"

Oil for gasoline engines has an "S" rating... S stands for Service

I personally use two synthetic oils, Mobile 1 Synthetic or Shell Rotella T Synthetic.

Be sure and get the DIESEL rated oil... the names are very similar for gasoline engine oils by Mobil and Shell. It's easy to be confused.

It's kinda hard to find the diesel synthetic oil... but I located mine at Walmart.

From the posts I've read here, it seems you could run any synthetic oil that you can put in Japanese sportbike...it doesn't foam, it is extremely resistant to viscosity and can withstand a frickin' beating (14-18,000 rpms) for an easy 3000 miles. Also, the ansi ratings of most high quality syntec oil is off the charts compared to OEM oils.

I may be missing something with added zinc, calcium and all that jazz, I don't know.

I'm going to research this a little further before my first oil change.

How many hours do you think should be on a DIESEL engine before you use Synthetic oil? Getting the rings to seat etc??? Then do you always have to use synthetic afterward??

JohnK, I know way more about sportbikes than tractors, but I'm learning and trying my best to "get it", but we always had our sportbikes broken in by the first 20 miles.

My point is, I don't see why rings can't be seated on a tractor the same way...???...???

Alternating rpm's/loads on the engine will seat them (theoretically anhow), again, unless I'm missing something.

Oil serves the same purpose, no matter what type, but there are differences: Syntec will resist viscosity longer (thus longer life, longer use of the same oil, thus don't have to change as often). Syntec will also resist burning more than carbon based oils. The list is long of the advantages, but if you are going to stay atop of the changes, regular carbon based oil is fine.

You can alternate between them if you wanted to because of your budget or whatever.

On a sportbike, we didn't run syntec oil until after the first 2500 miles, if the bike WASN'T broken in within the first 20 miles. On bikes broken in according to factory specs, the 2500 mile rule before syntec was in effect. The reason...I don't know. I just followed suit to all the guys who taught me and who build/race and work on bikes. It was just taboo, and I didn't ask why. Maybe I'm just a knucklehead...haha.

It seems like there is a formula as to how long a tractor should be run on regular oil before the super slippery synthetic should replace it. Then do you always have to use the synthetic???

It's alway's best to use a engine oil specefically for diesel engines. The additive package is alot different in diesel engine oils than gasoline engine oils. A gas engine oil may also carry a "C" rating but that doesn't mean it's the best thing for your engine. It just meets the minimum requirements to get the "C" commercial rating.

As far as break in time goes. If you plan to change to a synthetic just do it at your first oil change. It is completly safe to switch back to dino oil later in life if you like with no ill effects.

If you buy Caterpillar branded oil it's just relabeled Mobil Delvac. It's a good oil.

Is the CAT oil Delvac or Delvac one? I run Delvac one (synthetic) in all my diesels. It is expensive but I have read it is some of the best.

CAT's synthetic engine oil is relabeled Delvac One. I'm not sure about their conventional oil but I would think if their using Mobil for their synthetic their probably using Mobil as the supplier for their conventional also.
