Even our newest WalMart Super Center has a diesel pump along with the gas pumps.

We have diesel pumps at most stations here in California. It was once an issue, but not anymore. About the only station that does not routinely have diesel is ARCO. Diesel out here is about $2.25/gal. Despite the increase in fuel prices, all 30 million folks in this state are still driving with the same passion. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I note that you used the singular when you mentioned diesel pump--not pumps. That is what I am saying. Further many diesel pumps besides being filty dirty are not able to take cards. I don't want to go into the store and rub elbows with God knows what if I don't have to /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif. J

Remember folks; a barrell of crude roughly breaks down to 75% gasoline and 25% diesel.

( I think I get better mileage than a similar gas engine pickup. With auto, and 4.11's, a gas engine aint gonna get 15-18mpg. It is not true in all automobile comparisons though. I think you are right; a small engine tends towards better mileage in a small package. )

My 99 Silverado 4WD extended cab is 5.3 auto has 4.11's and averages 16.5-16.8 hwy/city mix and I've punched it up well over 300hp to boot. The sticker mpg is listed 15/17

What has killed diesel is the $5k premium price. For a diesel to work its has to be priced the same as gas.

I bought a VW Jetta TDI Wagon last summer and love it. Other than one batch of old (un-winterized) fuel this past winter, I've had no trouble (knock on wood). I get 40MGP consistently regardless of the driving, and that's with an auto trans. Very peppy car too.

I was very concerned about the reliability record of the VWs too. In digging deeper, I found a few things.

1) There was a cronic problem with the power window lifts which broke and caused windows to drop into the door, sometimes breaking the glass, and always leaving a wide open car regardless of weather, security, etc. Nasty problem, VW was very slow to respond to it, and they would not pro-actively repair all window lifts when one broke, so you got to have all your windows break before being clear of the problem.. They have now done a full recall and exetended the warranty on the window mechanisms to 7 years. New production of course is fixed too.

2) There was another cronic problem with the ignition coils (one for each cylinder). They would crap out and leave the car limping at best. Again, VW wouldn't pro-actively replace all of them when one failed, so most customers enjoyed this experience 4 or 6 times (depending on the number of cylinders). Stupid, stupid, customer service.

3) There were many complaints of poor workmanship in general, rattles, etc. I found that all the beetles, Jettas, and Golfs are built in either Mexico or Brazil. The Passats, on the other hand, didn't carry the same workmanship complaints, and are built in Germany. It also turns out that the Jetta TDI wagons are built in germany too.

My conclusion was as follows:

- Problem (1) has been fixed.
- Problem (2) does not exist in a Desiel
- Problem (3) is lesser with a car assembled in Germany

And I was keeping my Pathfinder so if the car crapped out at least I'd have transprtation - So I bought one.

Knock on wood.

Now that seems to make sense as my sisters Passat besides being very solid, is also quite trouble free.

Is it a 3//4 ton? I'm running a Ram-2500 Cummins, stock. It has an auto, with 4.11's. I haul anywhere up to 8k-lbs(I don't get 15mpg then...).

My previous trucks were '89 and '80 3/4 ton 4x4 Fords with 400ci/auto and 351ci/stick. I got 10-12mpg outa those. My '89 did do pretty good, hauling an 11' camper around the western states and south-western Canada. 8mpg though...

When you boosted it up, what kinda torque numbers did you get?

( When Chrysler first introduced the minivan a manual trans was available. Not sure when it was dropped in the US but I'm sure it didn't sell much. )

For what it's worth, I was in Europe earlier this year and drove a rented Chrysler Voyager mini-van with a diesel engine, 5 speed manual transmission, and loaded with options like DVD player and GPS. The vehicle was nearly brand new so I'm assuming that it was a 2004 model. It was reasonably peppy and fun to drive.

Most (>70%?) of the vehicles (cars, vans, etc) over there were diesels with manual transmissions. One thing that did surprise me is that I only saw one pickup truck.

When I asked fellow Americans why diesels were so much more popular in Europe than in the US, I was told that the European diesels do not meet US environmental standards. I have no idea whether this is true or not, but based upon other posts here indicating that some diesel vehicles produced for the US market aren't allowed in California, so the "Environmental Standards" may be the correct reason.
