On Friday afternoon (Jan 25 08) I filled two five gallon diesel containers with fuel at a Citgo station in Michigan's U.P.

The price of off-road was $3.09/gallon
The price of on-road #2 was $3.49/gallon
The price of on-road #1 was $4.59/gallon!

It seems that the $1.10 per gallon premium for #1 on-road is way too much for a few additives. I can buy a lot of Power Service for that kind of money.

What type of fuel are you buying and what's the price of fuel in your area?

Last time tank was filled (about 2 month ago) 3.54 for #1. Filled with 1 since tank was about 1/4 full of #2 so it evens out and have not had any issues.

Here in the greater Lansing, Michigan area, on-road diesel is around $3.40 a gallon. That is winterized #2 diesel. There are few off-road pumps so I don't know a current price, but past experience is that it's not enough cheaper to seek out those few pumps.

BTW, #1 diesel is not #2 with additives, it is an entirely lighter fraction that is basically kerosene and is very similar to jet fuel. The price difference does seem too high, but kerosene is always in demand for jets, of course. Even in the UP I would be inclined to use #2 with a good dose of anti-gel additive.

First year messing with diesel. This mix has apparently been used around here for a while and works, but will keep it in mind for next year. The #2 was not that much cheaper, just do not remember what it was. Thanks.

Understood-thanks for the info.

There was a Jetta TDI filling up with the #1 on-road @$4.59 per gallon. Both he and the guy working inside the Citgo suggested "there's a bunch of additives and stuff" in the #1 on-road and that's why it cost so much.

I think I will stick with the #2 on-road for $3.49/gallon and keep adding Power Service.

#2 diesel in So Cal is at $3.59 most places around town. It is higher than premium gas. At my rural property there is one Chevron station that has it for $3.32 but their gas is higher. Go figure?

Just bought fuel for the diesel pickup this afternoon. Paid $3.49/gal for #2 road diesel (3.48&9/10 in the ridiculous gas station pricing convention). Same station selling 87 octane regular for $2.93/gal and kerosene intended for heaters for $3.89/gal. A different station in town had #2 highway diesel at $3.60/gal. Ouch, these prices hurt!

#2 winter blend was $3.65 here yesterday. Down from about $3.69 a few days ago.
