Soundguy,

Used motor oil on dirt roads was a common practice in PA fo a lot of years also. They dont do it anymore that I know of but up into the late 80's I know it was being used by townships to control dust.

Yes I know the differance between used 30W, tack coat, and BM asphalt.

BTW, did you know that asphalt is considered a hazardous material, when it is removed? Not when its being put down, or while in place, but if you rip it up its now a hazard. ???????? Everything the EPA does not have to make sense. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Actually one of the benifits is that they started recycling it on at least the big jobs. Makes sense. Add BM and you have a viable material. I dont know if its cost effective to haul it back and forth, but when you set up a portable plant near the job it is probably as cost effective as anything else. It would be a real good thing in your area due to lack of stone, less $$ to haul in.

80's.. well sure.. I thought we were talking about current history. 80's and 70's we still had poly chlorinated biphenols.. ddt and lots of other good stuff. Some amonia refers, and just about anything packed into an aerosol can depleted ozone.

I can't speak for your state.. but in florida it isn't a hazardous mat'l.

Concrete/brick, asphalt, iron, glass, and tera cotta ( but not rubber entrained asphalt, or many fiberglas mixed concrete ) can all be considered 'clean fill' and can be buried or backfilled into unlined earth. If the material has vegitation in it.. it can only go into C&D areas.

I think it's sometimes hard to find something they do that DOES make sense... superfund comes to mind..

Very viable. We do quite a few reconstruction jobs, and part of the asphalt bid item is to mill the asphalt down, and sell it back to the asphalt plant, to reduce the supplied asphalt price.

Our local concrete plant re-processes waste concrete and asphalt and sells the asphalt millings to people at a few bucks a ton for driveway material.. Grab a few truckloads and get a local contractor to tack it for you and you almost have a permanent driveway.. for small auto traffic.. at a fraction of the cost of gravel. Same with crushed concrete... sells for just a few more $ per ton.. but is still cheaper than gravel...Crushed concrete can also be used in place of limerock when stabilizing subgrade on many jobs.

Our best money making machines are a Bros LSPRM 184 subgrade mixer, and a CMI RR250 reclaimer. The reclaimer can use a variety of tools.. from carbide to diamond depending on what you are milling or reclaiming.

We still have one local company that has an ad in the Yellow Pages under "Road Oiling" for dust control. Wonder if they use "used oil"?

I figure I ought to be considered a regular "environmentalist tree hugger". I hand planted 1500 trees on my property when I bought it in the 80's. Does that make up for me takin' a leak behind the barn a few times a week? EPA has to have a rule against that! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
