Diesel Storage and Grades

For me it probably wouldn't be worth the 55 gallon size. Don't use my tractor enough but I figured I would at least go with a 15 or 30 gallon storage. That is probably good for me just the thought of dragging 5 gallon cans around...what a pain /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif. I plan on putting up a quick shelter to store my diesel in away from the shed. Any comments on storing diesel and gasoline in the same area. Too many fuel cans around the shed, I figured it would be safer to move the fuel away from the tractor...Tractors come first /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif.

I went through maybe 8 gallons of diesel last yr on my tractor. I bought a 6 gallon gas can to buy my diesel and like you regretted it. My fuel tank only holds 5 gallons and it is never empty so I found myself holding 50 pounds of fuel over the tank trying to pour less than half of it into the tractor. I suppose I could do what harv does and string it up with some rope. Instead, I am looking to see if I can find a 2.5 gallon yellow diesel can. 2.5 gallons is like 2 months worth, is half a tank on the b7200 and weighs half as much as a 5 gallon can. That way I fill it up when it is half empty, always empty the can into the tank and always have fresh fuel.

While I like the though of having a fuel reserve, it is very hard to justify a barrel with lots of fuel with just a single compact tractor.

I use a $3 plastic kerosene hand pump/syphon. Just set the 5 gal. plastic can on the hood, one end of pump in the can, the other in the tank. A couple of squeezes on the bulb of the pump and gravity takes over. No mess, no fuss.

Ace Hardware in Trenton, Ga. carries them. I imagine any place that sells blue kerosene cans will have them. I have even bought cans that come with a pump.

I've seen similar fuel cans/pumps at Menard's. If Menard's handles things like this, I'd bet that Home Depot and Lowe's would too.

Home Depot sells an $11 battery operated pump and that is what I use. It takes 2 D cell batteries. The thing works really great, empties a 5 gallon fuel can in about 2 minutes. You stick one end in the can of diesel fuel, the hose end in the fuel tank, and turn it on. Works great.

This will get you to a great storage unit for gas and deisel. A bit pricey but a very nice storage container.
