They also have put that motor in the Nissan Titan. It all fell through when the truck merger between the two fell through.

DAF 45 light distribution trucks (7.5 to 12 ton GVW) use that QSB4.5 engine here in Europe at up to 207hp. DAF LF series - DAF Trucks N.V.
The Mercedes Atego uses a similar Mercedes 4 cylinder of up to 230hp.

When did Cummins build a V8 and put it in a p/u? I thought those were in-line six's. (with the smaller one being an in-line four)

Cummins did, in fact, develop both a V8 and a V6 diesel slated for half-ton trucks. The economy is what killed half-ton diesels.

Also, the 4bt could never be put in new trucks, it doesn't even come close to meeting the EPA emissions regulations.

My 2012 6.7 cummins (3.73 rear end, 4x4, 3/4 ton, all stock) is getting about 14.5-15.5 around town and 16.0-16.5 highway at 75mph in the mountains of WV. The truck only has about 1800 miles on it so I am hoping it goes up a bit once it is broken in. I also am light on the pedal so I am sure that helps.

No market for light diesels. The low price of direct injection gassers vs. the cost of the diesel option. Makes up for the slightly lower mileage but on much cheaper fuel.

I have to respectfully disagree - I think a light diesel would do very well. Not just due to the gas mileage but the torque and long term dependability. I have several friends that would love to have a small 1/2 ton diesel because they like diesels, want high torque for towing or off roading and the much higher mileage the small ones offer (they always say built by Toyota - something on the Tacoma platform for example)

CD players were expensive in the 80's but when more people bought them they quickly became more affordable. Same with half ton diesel pickups. Its all about splitting the development costs over the production numbers, even though Toyota has a great engine (4.5 l V8 diesel, 258hp, 487ft-lb offered in Australia, not here in Europe) and Dodge/Cummins has one too (QSB4.5 four cylinder, if a similar 3000rpm cam as the 6.7 Ram is used, capable of 233hp and 533ft-lb) but it needs some factory logistic investments.
I dont think people care its a 4 cylinder if it has the best torque values in the market... Its not an issue in europe anymore either, because the guys that get thrilled by the sound of a six pot dont drive a small truck with a 220hp four anyways, they get the full commercial license and want to drive a 450hp big rig...
People that insist on V8 sound will drive a gasser anyways...

I used to have a Toyota diesel pickup. Engine ran forever-got over 40 MPG. Couldn't have been more than 75HP..... truck rusted out though!

I didn't read the whole thread, but my vote for best MPG would be early Dodge Cummins 12V with a manual trans or a 6.2L GM/Ford 6.9L.
