Diesel truck with best MPG

We have two Cruze Turbodiesels at work. They have a 2.0. They cruise effortlessly at 80 and in other countries people have sustained 160kmh about 100 mph. But they have all kinds of aero tricks.

Real world use really impacts fuel economy. On a long highway trip down the east coast I averaged 48.7mpg with no special effort, and we've gotten individual tanks of up to 55 but the lifetime calculated average is 38.9, reflecting mixed highway and city operation.

Thats respectable but with 87 Octane at at $1.89 and Diesel running $3.49 in my area it does make sense. 85 % more for fuel is crazy At that price difference it's like the diesel Cruze gets about 20 mpg while my Ford F150 Ecoboost gets 18.3 and my wife's Ford Edge gets 25 mpg average. A gas Civic or Cruze could easily do 30 plus.

We had a 2002 Diesel VW Jetta with a 4-speed automatic that got 44 mpg in the summer and 40 in the winter (Diesel only cost $1.79 at the time).
Had nothing but trouble with the thing.
Now we have a 2014 Toyota Prius C that gets 54 mpg in the summer and 48 mpg in the winter.
The VW was $22,000 and the Pruis was $19,000.
The VW had a timing belt that needed to be changed every 80K miles.
The Prius has a maintenance free timing chain and doesn't even have a serpentine belt.

When we bought the Cruze a year ago, regular was 3.50-3.65 and diesel 4.00 to 4.10. Last week we were paying 2.35 for gas and 3.10 for diesel, can't really complain about either.

We have a Cruze Eco as well. MPG is about 20% lower in the same use. It cost $3,000 less. We drive them 40,000 miles per year and expect the diesels to last a lot longer and have better resale. But we bought both as an experiment.

We just bought a Ford Transit 250 van (medium roof) and there we got the EcoBoost as it has more torque than the diesel offered (400 vs 350 ft lbs), cost several thousand less, and we usually only drive the vans 15-18,000 per year so the diesel didn't add up.

Anyone under $3.30 per gallon is posting "exempt" prices in my area.

I stopped using Gas Buddy for diesel. The prices half the time are "exempt" which does 95% of us no good.

'03 Ford, 6.0 4x4 crew cab, long box.

Lets see, I've got a 4" exhaust, a 40HP tune on the FICM, an aftermarket turbo, EGR delete, and a 80HP SCT tune. Not sure what that means at the wheels but its very very fast.

Its been virtually flawless, except for a fuel pump.
I have 1 or 2 injectors that are starting to act up, but a (dodge) mechanic told me to try RevX in the oil. Miracle worker!

I just turned 200K and get about 15.5mpg in the summer and 13.5 in the winter.
