diesel truck

I've been considering a chip for my 2000 powerstroke/6-speed. I haul large loads, sometimes approaching 30,000# gross and am thoroughly impressed with the truck. But, sometimes I'd like a little more. I hear stories of more power and better mileage. Are they true? I have plenty of power @ 2,000 RPM, but that equates to 70 mph and a large moving violation. I would like more HP @ 1500-1900 RPM. I read that 1999 trucks needed the exhaust change, but 2000-up could get by with stock...true? I really hate to hurt the truck, but if it is a reliable improvement, I may try it.

No, I don't need one, however, it would be nice at 5:30 in the morning at 30 degrees...

Yes you do get good power and mileage increases. Typically you will never do any less than what you are currently doing. Most guys see a 1-2 mpg increase. Stay with a reputable brand though. Alot of problems with the off-brand ones. Personally I like Superchips. Whichever one you get make surea nd tell them you have a six speed.

Exhaust is pretty much the same. You can run one without the open exhaust but you will get much better performance, mileage, and lower egt temps with the bigger exhaust. For between $400-500 and a half days work it's well worth it.

If you did a superchip 60 hp, 3.5 or 4" exhaust and put on a pyro and boost gauge you will not do any harm at all and you will get significant and reliable improvement.

For all three things you will be less than $1000.

Want power? Pull that powerstroke out and put a Cummins in... Ya, the Cummins/Dodge would be good, but I'm talking a big step forward. Do something like the Cummins 8.9L 350hp 1500ft/lb like Ferrara/HME uses in some of the fire engines. I've driven one. Even with all the gear and water on the engine, that thing had POWER/w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Leave the PSD engine in just:

chip it (2 position TS Performance unit)
add LPG and NOS
Stage 2 injectors (165 cc/stroke)
H-max taper core intercooler
Brian's Truck Shop 4R100
4" downpipe to 5" straight exhaust
van turbo or H-max H2E
K&N open element aircleaner
-8 fuel feed lines to -6 inlets to each head and adjustable regulator with return to tank
Aeromotive A1000 fuel pump

That should give you around 500+ RWHP and 1250-1300 ft-lb torque.

Steve,
I still think it would still be cheaper to do what Maddog's doing/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Eric,
Like said before, chip it....I have a TTS 3 position chip which in the first position its the stock ford program....2nd position is tow mode and 3rd is race mod....

That sounds wonderful, but what about longevity? Similar things can be done to the Cummins 5.9 too with as good as or better results, but that 8.9L motor would outlast them...

Of course, the 8.9L motor would probably break the springs and blow the tires out before you even turned the key on...

What is the next step up from the PSD? Navistar makes lots of motors?

splitfire_owner,

I must be starting to sound like a salesman for the following
site /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif but I'm not. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif If you want to know more
about getting more umph out of your Ford try http://www.thedieselstop.com.
I think you could read for weeks even if you limited your
searches to boosting the power of your truck. Its a good
site for Ford diesels.

Cowboydoc gave you the right leads on how to do what you
want. The site I listed talks about how to put gauges in your
truck, WHY you want the gauges, exhaust, chips, BTS and
other trannys, etc. You can spend hours reading about this
stuff and &Diety only knows how much money on your truck!

Good Luck,
Dan

I've been on that site, lots of info, and people who seem to have $ to burn on aftermarket parts. If I do anything, probably guages, exhaust and chip, in that order....IF I do anything. I actually use this truck to tow, really would hate to damage it, or just lose some driveability. It works fine now, would feel pretty dumb to spend $1k, and not like it.

Next step up from Navistar is the DT466E then the DT530E. Both are inline 6's for MD to MHD truck use.

Devildog,

Good to see you over here too!!!

Too bad you own one of them orange tractors though..... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
