Word of advice. Find a competent independent mechanic or do the work on the vehicle yourself. if you go to the dealership, the $6.50 a quart oil will be the cheapest part of the service. The dealers are desperate and will pounce on you when you go through the doors.

Yep, already on the TDI forum, what a great place. Mon, i am taking the car up to a "trusted" TDI mech in KY to have him check out the engine & drivetrain. I want to make sure it's all within specs before i start my own maintenance routine. I am definatly staying away from the dealerships. The PO had almost all maint done at a dealership, said he was lucky to have the same competent mech work on the car for the last 6 years.

I've got a 2003 Jetta TDI Wagon. It's get s dependable 45 MPG no matter where/how I drive, and that's with an automatic. So far dependability has been very good, though I have heard many many horror stories about VW reliability, and about their service in particular. They had a very bad repution in the early 2000 time frame with a rash of problems like windows falling into the doors, and VW refused to belly up to the problem. Finally, a year or so ago they admited there was an issue with the window mounts and offered to fix them and extend warranty coverage for them.

Anyway, mine has been good. I had one defective switch that was fixed under warranty. Since then I have done oil changes only, and in the last month did the timing belt, brakes and shocks front and rear, and sway bar bushings. All of these were done pro-actively at my request, but they were clearly coming due. At 93k miles, I consider this normal wear and tear maintenance. I've also recently had two temp sensors go. One is the fluid level indicator, and the other is the engine temp sensor. Each was less that $30 and a 15 minute swap out.

Besides the reliability dimension, I love the car. It fits me well, and at 6' 3" I can't say that about many cars, especially a small one like the Jetta. Its also a blast to drive - tight, nimble, and quick, especially for a diesel. It always starts flawlessly even in extreme cold (below zero F), and runs great. The only downside in the cold is that it takes a long time to warm up since it's so darn efficient. I can be 20 minutes into my commute to work before I reach full operating temp.
PS there is a recall on the windows ,call you vw dealer. PAPY

HI GUY its not the injector pump. there are two kinds of pumps on the older one it was a mechanical pump, and the newer ones are computor injected, the oil has noting to do with the pumps, its the turbo that makes eng run hoter makeing the oil brake down, and the oil the cools and lubes the turbo.the oil line are to near the exaust braking down the normal oil use, there have been many eng replacement warrenty by vw . the oil pick up in the oil pump gets pluge up with other brands of oil.

With a new tractor, I can't afford to buy a used VW tdi. I could if I sold my truck, but then I might as well move to the city. I just wish I could find a good used tdi engine to put in my Samurai. I have of people doing this and still getting 35mpg with lower gears and mud tires. JC

My wife and I have an 06 TDI Jetta with a 5 speed, and love it. Have had it for about 18 months now, and have put around 44,000 miles on. I drive 120 miles round trip Monday - Friday for work, and needed to find something that would get me the best mileage possible (without the headaches of a hybrid). Have been averaging a pretty consistent 45-48mpg over a mix of street and highway driving.

I too have heard that the new 08 TDI has been delayed until late summer/early fall this year because of some emissions problems. But the good news is more power and better mileage over the current one - plus a wagon will be available.

Anyway, it's a nice compliment to our 03 Dodge 2500 Cummins Turbo Diesel!

Enjoy your new car,
Chris

I'm looking at the same situation, we want to move to our place in the country and commute, so a new Jetta might be in my future.

The mech checked everything & only found one problem. The Tb was done @ 110K. The PO told me it was supposed to be the newer 100K belt. Apparently VW didn't recall the "old" 60K belts, so there are a ton of them still in dealer inventory. Yep, it is a 60K belt.....due in 450miles. Sooo, i have already ordered the TB kit($305), & have an appointment in a couple of weeks to have it installed. I was going to do this myself, but the mech only charges $300 in labor. I can handle that every 100K!
The mech has an interesting nitch, a full time Paramedic & on the side he only works on TDI's. Nice guy & very resonable( in Lexington KY).

MotorSeven, you might be able to find a tdiclub member in your area or close to you that would be willing to help you do that TB for nothing.
