Arrow, my 970 is a 93 model, spec's from manual are, length 123 inches, 33 hsp, hyd pressure 2250 at relief. The 970 came std with a with a collar shift trans and had a synchromesh offered as an option. I have that option.
Manual shows the non-synchro also as a 9 speed forward and 3 reverse drive train. All models are shown as planetary final drives. Steering was manual for standard and hyd boost as an option.

cheers,

I have looked at pictures on the internet of the 970, it indeed looks as if it has 24's out back. In 85 I bought a JD 750, it also has 24's but tire is narrower of course. Five or six years later I bought the 970 because I thought I needed a bigger tractor. I kept the 750 as a just in case spare. I swear the 970 had only 2 sets of forward as did my 750. I know I had 28's in the rear because I told the dealer I wanted the largest ag tire he could fit. The tractor had turf tires when I first saw it. He may of slapped on whatever he had but he didn't charge me the extra as he told me that was standard size. It was one **** of a puller and I wish I had that tractor today. I also remember him saying it had the same tranny as did my 750 I bought from him years back. Perhaps he was alluding to the collar shift. I do not remember the third set of forwards nor would I be prone to use them for the work I had with the 970. Its all water under the bridge now and I apologize for giving you info based on something I didn't have any longer to personally check it out better and who knows what that dealer was doing if he knew he was pulling up stakes in a month and didn't bother sharing that info with me. Now you got me wondering if he put on a 970 decal on a 950, cept the engine was covered/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Difference, that's subtraction right? So, JD 990 - JD 970 = 20. Am I right? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Arrow, according to my owners manual the tire choices on the 970 were as follows:

2WD, 5.50-16 front, 12.4-28 rears

FWD, 7.00-16 front, 13.6-24 rears

I have since changed my front tires (using 7" 990 rims) to Goodyear 240/70R16 Radials. This tire is 9.6 inches wide with just about the same height as the OEM 7.00-16 Firestones.
The best thing I like about the 970 is that sweet Yanmar engine. My tractor produces zero visual exhaust smoke and does a lot of work for gallon of fuel.

cheers,
