Difference between D and DA on TC models?

/ Difference between D and DA on TC models? #11
When first models came out; they were "d" models; when newer models came out with more features; they became DA models. So, D models are just older models. i KNOW tc "d" models started in late 1999.

The "D" stands for "Deluxe," and the "DA" stands for "Darn Awful" lights.:laughing::laughing:

Actually, the "DA" stands for "Deluxe" with "Advanced" features, I believe. The DA model tractors were a major styling change that included the new lights and changed hood. It also had some changes to the electrical circuits with a new controller/timer for the glow plugs and a change to some relays. The rear lights were moved from on top of the fenders to mounted on the ROPS. Also, the handrails were redesigned and moved to the tops of the fenders, and the operator seat was changed slightly in color and style. The battery was changed so it didn't outgas into the radiator like the old one. The HST models have a bigger return spring to help prevent the sticking pedal problem. There are also some changes to the instrument panel and some of the switches for turn signals were changed.

EDIT: Reading MikePA's post made me realize my comments were slanted toward the Class III tractors. The Class II tractors don't have the rabbit/turtle function.

Also, the gear model tractors just used to be "TC" and a number. After the styling changes, they changed to add the "A" on the end. For example, the TC40 became the TC40A. Like the deluxe models, I think this change came about with the 2004 year model tractors.

Okay Jinman, I've just bought the TC48DA 2004 and your post helps me a great deal. My follow up question is what is the difference between the 18LA and the 16LA? My TC48DA came with the 18LA loader?

Bigger, stronger loader built for bigger, stronger tractors. The 16LA fits Class III non-SuperSteer New Hollands, the 18LA fits Class IV tractors.

To quantify what RickB said, the difference is about 350 lb more lift for the 18LA loader in real-world numbers. If you compare the lift at the loader pins, the 18LA has 500 lb more lift.

Also, the 18LA is New Hollands old number for the former manufacturer of loaders. Their new loader that compares to the 18LA would be the 270TL loader. It used to be that New Holland had the even numbered loaders for non-SS tractors and the odd-numbered ones were for SS tractors. For example, the 14LA, 16LA, 18LA were all for non-SS. The 15LA and 17LA were the same loaders for SS class II and class III tractors. Now the numbers are a bit of a mess like the tractor models. There's the 240TL that replaced the 14LA and the 240TL SS for supersteer. However, when you get to the next class up, there's the 250TL for non-supersteer and the 260TL for the SS model. If this is a bit confusing, don't worry. I have the table open in another window. That is the only reason I can post about this without too many errors.

EDIT: Bear in mind also that Case/Farmall has the same loaders with yet a different set of numbers. Trying to keep all the numbers straight is like a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

Holy Cow!

I want you to know grateful I am that you are willing to answer these type of questions from a rookie like me!:D I only hope I can pay this forward someday. I've seen your posts to serious problems and I realize there are much bigger concerns regarding tractor ownership than what the Loader difference is -- I've got a lot to learn. Thank you again for being willing to help and share with me -- thanks.

Somewhere in there is a designation that indicates a hydrostatic tractor vs. shuttle-shift. Our TC40 is a shuttle, and I believe it was called a TC40A, but now I'm gonna have to go find my paperwork. Whatever it is, the hydro designation also indicated tilt steering and a couple other features, which the shuttle tractor doesn't have.
