The S tines do a remarkable job of scratching at hard packed material. They also claw up stones.
You can adjust the spacing between the two rollers to determine how course a material comes out the back and the rest gets pushed forward or windrowed if angled.
In a way, I guess anything you spin will do basically the same thing with minor variations. Just like, a hundred different things can be used as a drag.
I'm guessing, my old rake was the culmination of years of R&D. In the end, it was just too expensive to manufacture and was scaled back in design.
