dig it 198t transmition problems

Got the wiring all done. The generic ignition harness was too short so I ended up purchasing new wire, terminations and plugs and made my own. Ended up being around 30" long instead of 18" I had a couple of wires backwards on one end of the plug. Found that out when I tried to start it and it would not do anything. I had the yellow(mag) and the red reversed. Figured that out by plugging the ends together and that is when I realized my error in ways. I thought I had followed end to end but some how I had screwed that up. So, new switch is in and all new wiring. Waiting on a new knob for the throttle as the new cable did not come with one. Ordered a new hour meter as well. The old one works but wanted to start over with the new motor. I moved a pile of dirt last weekend and she works like a new one. I have a hydraulic leak some where in the back boom but it is pretty small and I keep a drip pan under it. I bought my brother's half out so I am the sole owner now. Doubt at this point anyone will read this but wanted to pass on the latest. Great little rig if you ask me.

Congrats on the repair work and successful completion :)

I have a 198t that sat for 10 yrs.
The transmission started to get slow.
I replaced the transmission filter, and found that it was packed full of the old fluid film.
Now it runs ok but at full speed the transmission and steering come and go constantly.
Could there be a clog somewhere else causing this?
The backhoe seems to work fine, if that means anything.
Thanks :)

Hey John,

I am still around. I would drain the transmission completely and refill with fresh ATF fluid. Hopefully you did not reclog the new filter. The back hoe and front bucket hydraulics are separate from the transmission and use standard motor oil as hydraulic fluid. So, the back hoe working has nothing to do with the transmission. Fresh fluid should help. The transmissions are pretty solid. Good luck.

Thanks for the info Steve.
I'll try that.

I do have one more question.
Is the differential shaft driven, or does the fluid run through it too?
From outside I really cant tell as there is a tube connecting the 2 units.
Thanks :)

The hydro-static transmission pump is driven by a short drive shaft from the back of the motor to the front of the hydro transmission pump. There is a short drive shaft from the back of the pump to the differential-almost a direct connection. So the fluid in the system works by converting energy harnessed from the movement of fluid through hydraulic pump to the drive train of a Digit. There is no fluid going through that back drive shaft or the differential of the DigIt. It gets it energy from the hydro-static pump. Not very speedy but highly functional. I have a persistent leak in one of my hydro-static hoses I need to track down. Small but very irritating. Right now I keep a drip pan under it.

I drained all the fluid and put a new filter in.
It still keeps stopping.
I did discover something new.
Today it stopped and wouldn't start going again.
I turned the throttle down and the transmission started working again. And worked good.
If I run it at half throttle the transmission works fine, at full throttle it keeps stopping and starting.
does this make any sense?
Thanks for any help!

I haven't read through all the posts but have you checked the hydraulic pick up line in the tank?
I have worked on equipment that had the screen sucked into a wad from being plugged with debris and the pump could not get fluid.
Lower rpm would let it pick up fluid.
