I live on blount mtn here in bama at around 1300' with no trees in the way and it takes a heck of a rain to make the signal flicker at all. usually it takes very heavy down poors to nock it out completely for the duration...But what I have noticed is most of the time due to the angle of my dish at 1300' if it down poors a few miles away the signal gets block for a few minutes...i think the longest outage has ben 30 min during those severe storms that cover from Mississippi to GA on occasion.

Local channels are nice and clear and on the same channel they would by by antenna....

I had cable at the old house and I have spent enough time playing with it and so forth to say I really like the dtv better over all compared to my old cable.

PBurns,
The satellites used for internet service (DirecPC or DirecWay) are separate from the ones used for your TV signal. If you have a round dish you are only "seeing" the DTV main bird, but there are actually 3 different slots. The other two birds are used for ethnic, local, and HDTV programming. While there are a few locals on the main satellite, all HDTV are on the secondary birds because of the bandwidth those channels use up.

There are several different satellites being used for the internet service. I'm not sure myself what the latest customers are pointed at as I haven't done any DPC for a year or so....long story, but short version is those installs don't pay well enough compared to the TV side.

As for deleting the "Family", I haven't seen a receiver that will let you get rid of it. Re-name maybe, but not get rid of it. And I agree that the spam is pretty lame.
