Disc Harrow Blade Quality

I am to a point in a disc harrow restoration project where I am ready to replace the blades. I have narrowed my choice to a 20", 5 mm notched blade to fit a 1 1/8" axle. In looking at AgriSupply web site they actually have two different 5mm thick blades listed. One is made in Brazil and one in India. I have been able to find one comment in favor of each of the different blades.

I would like to hear from those that have tried both or either and if they have experienced issues or any suggestions. AgriSuppy indicates the Brazil made have a 1080 Carbon rating and the India made have a 1070 Carbon rating. Any comments or recommendations on where to get more information on this topic would be appreciated. I am buying 20 of these blades and so far the Brazil blades are about $5 higher per blade than the India made.

We have had VERY good luck with the Brazilian 22" heavy (thickest that they have) notched blades. :thumbsup:

I like the sense of humor. I certainly mean no offense by not jumping on the Brazilian blades, but would like to hear if anyone had used the Indian blades and had problems and changed to the Brazilian without issues. I went back and read over the other thread I have on the restoration process and noticed you actually stated you had bent Indian blades and had no problems with the Brazilian, so I guess you answered the question.

I read the long post on the link you attached. My interpretation was that there didn't seem to be significant difference between the Carbon 1070 and 1080...and then two of the posters got into an argument over who knew more about metal!:laughing:

After searching further today I came across a site that builds custom disc harrows for forestry applications. These things are heavy duty and would likely be used in extreme conditions that most disc harrows would not see. I was able to send them an email and speak to someone by telephone. I posed the same question as above asking which would be better long term, the Brazilian blade or Indian blade.

The gentleman I spoke with said he run the question by the guy that would know the most about the blades and his response was "if you can get the Brazilian blades for only $5 more go for it". He said that "the Brazilian blades were stronger and would resist chipping better".

With that being said, sounds like the consensus is the Brazilian blades are better quaility and likely worth the 25% increase in cost.

The Indian blade was $20.42 and the Brazilian blade was $25.43. Both are 20", notched, 5 mm thick that will fit a 1 1/8" axle. This is the thickest 20" blade they had listed. Some of the bigger blades have thicker blades available.

Thanks for the numbers. My little 5' KK disc uses 18" discs. Imagine the prices would be very close though. I rolled the tips back bad on two of my discs today while discing up some new ground to plant food plots come spring. Too many gum tree stumps, but I've about got my plots ready. The big stumps I just lift and ride over, but teh small ones I can't see anymore.
